In 1951 it became the Loveless Cafe and in the seventies and eighties "the modest roadside eatery that once had been Nashille's secret went national. Discovered by food writers . . . the Loveless found itself recognized as a precious cultural institution." As fast food gained popularity travelers were looing for old-fashioned country cookin'.

Meet the Author

Michael Stern was raised at a Heartland table of square meals. The Sterns monthly “Roadfood” column in Gourmet magazine has earned them three James Beard Awards for journalism. They are heard weekly on Public Radio's The Splendid Table.

Jane Stern was raised in New York City and southern Arizona, learning to love both hot pastrami sandwiches and bordertown chimichangas. She met Michael Stern when they were graduate students at Yale University, at which point the couple set out on a lifelong quest to find the best American food and to write about it.

I am a cookbook collector and if I bought this one for no other reason than to get the recipe for the Candied Bacon, it was worth every penny I spent. All of the recipes sound good, but the Candied Bacon is to die for! Buy it.

translation error to the digital copy! I don't like chicken salad in my peach preserves!

the only reason for 2 stars is there is no biscuit recipe as stated in the name of the book. The rest of the book is quite good but would have rated 4 stars with the biscuit recipe.

On the cover of the cookbook (on the ad) it says 'biscuits' which is why I bought the book. When I received the cookbook, the word biscuit is no longer in the title and they do not have a recipe for biscuits.--I was very disappointed
