Overview

Spaceheater/Perfect Interior

Collecting the Goslings' first two small-run, CD-R EPs on one disc (in reverse order of release) for wider exposure via Crucial Blast, Spaceheater/Perfect Interior shows that the husband/wife team of Max and Leslie Soren can make shadowy, aggressive feedback noise with the best of them, in their own beautifully crumbly way. Roots in everything from the Dead C to Skullflower are obvious enough, while they're easily peers of many similarly inclined acts around the world -- white noise rises, falls and stops on a dime while percussion via gongs and scraps of singing weave in and out of hearing, and that's just Spaceheater's opening song "In May." Said song actually takes up well over a quarter of the disc's running time, so as a statement of intent it functions wonderfully, while the remaining eight tracks cover what the duo can do in (relatively) shorter and sharper shocks. The majestic opening guitar rise of "Statuette" could be something off of Lovesliescrushing's debut releases, at once overwhelming and distanced (which Leslie Soren's vocals help to shape even more beautifully), while "Celestine" in particular shows Max Soren's abilities at making one guitar drone sound like the tip of a massive iceberg. In context songs like the stripped-down and more straightforward "Summer for Spring" and "Bloom Again" provide a perfect counterpoint, showing that the Goslings can play it straight but still very much on their own terms. Max takes some vocals as well, perhaps, though the distorted groans on "Lillian" could easily just be what happens when you slow down even the highest-pitched voice that much.
