More than six years after their last collective stint in the studio, America's most enduring power-pop juggernaut rolls into the new millennium with little sign of rust -- and not a lick out of place. Special One, Cheap Trick's 19th disc, harks back to the classics the band churned out in the '70s, replete with everything from the requisite beelines from straight-ahead three-chord pop ("My Obsession") to ornate, Move-styled mini-epics (the arcing title track). All the members pitch in on writing this time around, and it's interesting to see their differing approaches presented in such stark contrast. Tom Petersson's "Pop Drone," for one, lives up to its name -- a simple, hypnotic tune that's reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's forays onto Eastern ground. Rick Nielsen's "If I Could," on the other hand, scurries by like a time-lapse rock history flick, cramming gentle folk, ethno-pop, and guitar heroics into a single construct. The mood is equally unpredictable, comprising both typically goofy sensuality ("Low Life in High Heels") and surprisingly cutting commentary (the from-the-headlines horror show "Sorry, Boy"). Having had their praises sung by everyone from Kurt Cobain to Homer Simpson, Cheap Trick don't have much left to prove, but on Special One, they play as if every note matters.

Special One is a CD that points more to the future of this All American Rock act than to it's past. Oh sure, there's all the things that make a Cheap Trick album theirs alone, but the new sounds that appear here make me more anxious to see what they have up their sleeve in the future than make me what to run and grab my Dream Police CD. They've had clunkers in the past, but with new management and seemingly more in control of their musical content, they seem to be thriving at an age when most groups are putting out their "best of.." Cds. Great stuff for old fans and future fans!
