A rare gem in the fantasy genre, this book is exquisitely well wrote. The story unfolds with a time travel adventure to Colonial New England, which is as meticulously researched, as it is fantastically told. In a Shakespearean-style comedic twist, the heroine of the story finds herself transported back to the 1770s, in the body of a man. However, she did not fall back in time alone - with her is the enigmatic Russian adventurer Leo Rumyantsev, whose devilish charm and moral ambiguity mask a hidden agenda of his own. In a relentlessly funny series of events, Sadie is quickly caught up with her fellow patriots in their war against the British. She finds herself in her own past life identity as Samuel Pearson, a young revolutionary. It's not long before she's in trouble and comes under the wing of Benvolio the Scot, whose honor and faithfulness starkly contrast with Leo's calculated machinations. Love gets complicated not only in the love triangle that ensues, but with the pesky fact of a gender change! Yet, admist the humor and romance, something else followed them back in time. And as a malevolent force catches up to Leo and Sadie the battlefield transforms onto the terrain of the soul, where both characters must confront the darkness within themselves and decide what's truly worth fighting for.
