About the Author

Della Connor (D.E.L. Connor) was born in South Dakota and raised in Southeastern Montana where she acquired a keen appreciation for Western and Native American culture. She moved to Texas as a young adult and acquired her honorary Texan status. She became a registered nurse, a nurse practitioner and eventually earned her PhD in nursing. She still works as a nurse educator and as a nurse practitioner. Her nights and weekends, however, are filled with her stories and books.
The Spirit Warriors story evolved from a short story she wrote for a college English class in the early 1990's. The professor read it, loved it and asked her to stay after class and discuss it. During this discussion, he told her that a "dark" story like hers, that was written for older children, would be unmarketable and unsaleable. The story kept floating around in her mind. Finally, J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyers and others stepped forward with amazing "dark" stories to create a new genre called Young Adult. The time was finally right for her series!

I received a free copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. I have a lot of feelings about this book. And they're all conflicting. I WANT to like this book. Really I do. But I don't know that I can given that it's a book written by a very white passing person that features Indigenous American people's cultures and spiritual practices and showing white people participating in them. Personal feelings aside, I had a feeling as to who the evil person in their lives would be as it's "subtly" hinted through the entire book. The writing was well written and made me feel like I was actually there. Which is to say that it's very descriptive and does showing as well as telling. Which I always appreciate since a lot of times it's more tell than show and what's being told contradicts with what's being shown. And I LOVED the friendships shown in this book. And that the girls weren't catty to each other. Read the full review here: https://blowpopsbooks.wordpress.com/2016/01/30/review-the-concealing/

At first, this story was difficult for me to get into. At times there is too much telling and back story, especially in some of the early dialog. It had hints of something beyond the ordinary that was going to happen, but then the story drifted back into talking about the relationships among a group of teenage friends, the supernatural seemingly forgotten. After the first third, however, the story picks up the pace and the plot gets more and more interesting. It is rich with Native American tales and transference of spirits into animals. Once I got caught up in the story, it was difficult to put down. It is hauntingly sad and chilling.

This book is simply too amazing to put into words. I have read a lot of books, but this series is by far my favorite. This book deals with the realities of life along with fantasy and adventure that makes a good book. A great read and I would recommend it.

I cannot believe this book. It was an amazing story line with lots of plot twists, also very unique story line.  I've never really been into many YA books because many of them just don't seem to catch my interest, and for the first 500 "Parts" or 10 pages I thought this was going to be just like that. It wasn't it was absolutely enchanting after everything got going. Like I said the first part took me a moment to read but after that I just could NOT put this down. I soared through the entire book in less than 5 hours, and I'm already reading the second. I can't wait to see what other trouble these characters get into all five of them!

Reviewed by Kayci Webster for Readers' Favorite Five teens, the best of friends, find that they are not only friends, but they have a mission in life. They are Spirit Warriors - they can move their own spirit to share the body of an animal, then back to their own body. What a trick to learn when you are 15! Spirit Warriors follows these five friends as they are brought to a time when they are needed to use their powers to defeat an evil. They have trained and looked for the evil for a while now, but when they are finally confronted with it, they are surprised. It came in a disguise that no one would have expected and almost leads them into trouble. Spirit Warriors by D.E.L. Connor is well written and entertaining, and with the main characters all being in the middle teens, they bring in a world of issues from that same teen life. This makes the story good for the teen and young adult market, while keeping the topics of abuse and homosexuality, which are mentioned, in a brighter light. Nothing of the actual abuse is described but more alluded to, and so I find that the way the kids work through finding out these things to be beneficial to readers. Some will say this is the perfect book for girls, and while there are three girl teens in the main cast, there are also three boys throughout the book. I find it has a mix that girls will enjoy, and yet there is still enough action and adventure to interest boys as well. It is a coming-of-age novel that deals with the harsh realities of life, and at the same time, it entertains you with the spirits.
