Spodie's Back

Nineteen-year old trumpeter Derrick Shezbie on his debut as a leader effectively mixes together New Orleans jazz with more modern bop. Quite frequently the ensembles are Dixielandish (both Shezbie and trombonist Corey Henry are strong in that idiom) while the solos move the music up to the early '60s with hints of modality. Surprisingly the many guests from the Branford Marsalis version of The Tonight Show Band are not all that relevant to the music's success. Shezbie is the dominant force throughout this date and he is able to enjoy playing the old time jazz while not being shy to modernize aspects of the music. This often exuberant effort is quite impressive.
