If you own this book, you will never need to look up a sport on Wikipedia ever again. It includes all of the more popular sports: soccer, baseball, basketball, etc., but it also contains the very obscure: pétanque, Eton Fives, sepak takraw. The book is divided into sections like winter sports, water sports, team sports, racquet sports, etc., which makes referring back to any sport easy. History, rules, and regulations are explained fully and in simple language, with very few, if any, gaps in information. The Olympic section is quite useful as a general overview but does not have sufficient information for someone, say, writing a report on a specific Olympiad. Overall, The Sports Book is useful and entertaining. It can be read as needed as a reference book, or from cover to cover. I would say it's a necessary addition to any personal library.

When you are flipping thru the TV and come across a guy wielding fat headed hockey stick and smacking a small white ball towards a small netted goal with two white pipes sticking up from it and you wonder, "What the hell sport am I watching?" this is the book that can tell you. From Hurling to Curling and every sport in between this book gives a brief overview of each. While not all inclusive, it gives just enough with diagrams and illustrations covering the rules, etc. to get you thru the game you just discovered.
