Description: This book provides a cohesive but nonencyclopedic review of sports-related injuries to the foot and ankle. Marder has written review articles and participated in biomechanic and anatomic studies investigating the ligaments of the ankle, providing a foundation for this text. It serves as a guide to the evaluation and treatment of a variety of foot and ankle problems, with the ultimate goal of expediting the athlete's return to sport.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a readable text summarizing the nonoperative, operative, and important rehabilitation guidelines for injuries involving the foot and ankle.
Audience: The book is most useful for the medical student, orthopedic resident, and orthopedist interested in evaluating and treating injuries of the foot and ankle. Without further review of the literature, however, it may be insufficient by itself to predicate a detailed treatment plan.
Features: There are nine chapters. The first is a concise discussion of the evaluation and treatment of ankle soft tissue injuries, fractures, and osteochondral lesions of the talus. The subsequent chapters review conditions of the hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot, tendons, nerves, skin, and nails. The last chapter is an excellent review of orthotics, bracing, and taping. There is liberal use of schematic, radiographic, and intraoperative pictures to help the reader efficiently review and recall the material. In addition to its scope, the book's strengths also include a how to approach to several alternative operative procedures useful to those who do not perform them on a regular basis. Its limitations include its anticipated cost and its failure to specifically address injuries as sport-specific (i.e., ballet, aerobics).
Assessment: This book provides the interested reader with a neatly packaged review of common foot and ankle injuries occurring in the athlete, with an emphasis on returning them quickly back to sport.
