In today’s hectic world, many whodunit fans don’t have time to get their mystery fix diving into a whole novel. Lauren Carr’s SPRING THAW AND OTHER MYSTERY SHORT STORIES is for these fans—but that doesn’t mean whodunit fans who do have time can’t dive in as well.

My Thoughts: Normally, I'm not really into short stories, because I am always left wanting more. More drama, more mystery, more everything. But these short stories were an absolute joy to listen to. The narrators did a fantastic job. I never had trouble keeping the characters straight during dialogue heavy scenes, nor did I feel the need to constantly speed up the playback. The characters themselves were very well done, though not necessarily extraordinary. I don't think they are supposed to be, as the mystery is what is compelling each tale. The real stars for me were the dogs. Each story featured a different dog, and each dog had their own personality. If you are a dog lover, you know that no two dogs are alike. Each is unique with its own traits and quirks, just like humans. Often dogs will be written generically, with traits of loyalty, cuddling, and sometimes mischief. When a dog lover writes a dog, you can see the appreciation for the different types and instincts each dog has and just as much thought is put into their personality as any other character. I truly appreciated Lauren Carr's understanding and love of animals and the significant roles they play in our lives. If you enjoy a good story with intrigue and plot twists, pick up this collection of stories. You will not be disappointed.
Spring Thaw is the first short story in this collection. An old friends of Chris’ father is being charged with killing a church bishop seven years prior. Around the time of the murder he had cut ties with people but Chris is determined to help how his son. I loved how Chris was not going to just let this charge go without more proof and he discovers there is a lot more to the story than when everyone knows. Included in this collection are also previously published stories with Mac Faraday where an estate sales leads to so much more. Cameron Gates and Joshua Thornton looking into a woman being threaten with dead roses. Joshua Thornton is asked to help clear the name of a dying woman’s son so she can go in peace. Mac looks into the death of a wealth woman by her dog hating ex. And of course there is Gnarly helping stop a robbery and getting out of a dognapping. Having never read the other stories I was thrilled by this collection. They are all a great addition for anyone that enjoys mysteries and a wonderful sampling of Lauren Carr’s books. But then I learned that all but the first book have already been released. I’m torn on my feeling about this. Overall I loved the book and I just love how Mike Alger brings these books to life. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.

Spring Thaw: A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery Novella and Other Mystery Short Stories gets a well deserved five plus stars from me. I cannot wait to read full length novels the series the stories are from. Most definitely worth a read. Highly recommended! I received an audio version of this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
I was curious to see how Lauren Carr would do with a short story, she does so well with full length novels. It was no surprise that I loved them…ALL. Long or short, she can spin a tale that keeps you spellbound. Spring Thaw, the novella gets us started. Chris would be chaperoning his daughter on a class trip to Hershey Park. I’m guessing they’ll find more than chocolate. His faithful companion, Sterling, went most everywhere with him. He is a retired police dog who had been injured in the line of duty. Sterling’s undercover getup had me cracking up. Fabulous critter with huge personality. The collection features many of the characters from her series, from human to critter. Kept me laughing and pondering, trying to cypher the ending as I read. Standing in line? Waiting in the doctor’s office, any time you have a few minutes, you can read one of these shorts. I especially loved A Gnarly Christmas. Talk about an exceptional character, Gnarly steals the show. Ends on such a sweet note, perfect for the holiday season. I loved them all. Lighter than her novels, but still plenty of villains and danger to go with the smiles and laughter. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Spring Thaw by Lauren Carr.
