Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite Squelched: Succeeding in Business and Life by Finding Your Voice by Terry Beard explores themes of self-worth, self-confidence, and how to create a positive impact by finding one’s unique voice and having the courage to use it. In the beginning, the author states that: “When we don't feel good about ourselves, we have a difficult time standing up in front of others and withstanding the prospect of being judged and possibly found wanting.” And this is a powerful observation that reflects the reality of what is going on in many lives. The world is a noisy place and it finds myriad ways to hush us, making us feel as if our voice doesn’t matter or that it is not strong enough to make a difference. In this book, the author takes readers on a personal journey through the path of a voice lost and found, and offers relevant and helpful tips on how to identify and claim one’s unique voice. But this book is more than that! The book reads both like a memoir of the author’s adventures and travels while in the army and an inspirational narrative on finding one’s path, a journey towards reclaiming one’s voice. The tone is clear, and even though readers might occasionally find expressions that are awkward, the author’s voice comes out robustly and confidently. The author makes this book an enjoyable read by weaving personal history and real life experiences into it. The insightful passages are strong enough to compel readers to think about themselves, to consider ways in which they have been discouraged from accepting and using their unique voice, and how to find the courage to stand up for themselves. Squelched: Succeeding in Business and Life by Finding Your Voice is a thoughtfully written book with a powerful message and offers a path that, once travelled, will surely lead readers to a place in their heart where they will find the courage to be what they are meant to be.
Finding your voice is more then just opening ones mouth and having sound come out! Finding your voice means reaching deep inside one’s self and being honest with one’s self. Mr. Terry Beard not only reached deep inside himself but he found the way to take us on his journey and shared the steps that he used and then gave us the road map to do the same personal discovery. Mr. Beard found the courage to not only be honest with himself but with ALL of us - now that is real courage! I recommend to all of you to read this book slowly and savor the moments and reflect on your own life. Let Mr. Terry Beard’s courage become your own courage and then you may continue finding your own voice and find the strength to help another person find their voice. Give your family members, friends, colleagues, a stranger this book to read and let their voice of courage grow. Thank you Mr. Terry Beard for lending us a helping hand without lecturing us; but sharing pages of honest wisdom.
In an increasingly illiberal world hellbent on SQUELCHING our freedom of expression and speech at almost every turn, MR. BEARD'S BOOK IS TIMELY! He proves himself to be a REBELLIOUS AND COURAGEOUS FREE THINKER who has overcome his past obstacles by facing his fear of PUBLIC SPEAKING. By finding his VOICE, he hopes to help us find ours. Here's to BREAKING THROUGH OUR MENTAL PRISONS! Here's to speaking our minds and being UNSQUELCHED!
In "Squelched," Beard comes across as just the right kind of sparring partner for me! While I am a big talker, I can't stand to get in front of a larger audience. Can't stand it. I hide behind the mic or the keys. I found myself arguing with Beard as I read: How did he get to where he is now? Why public speaking? Throughout this memoir-style work, I found myself enamored by Beard's very plain-spoken language. The pages are often full of sayings and metaphors that you can just imagine the "country eloquent" author using at the kitchen table with his wife. Sometimes, he takes us pretty far into his personal life, seemingly apart from his core message about public speaking, but stay with him. My recommendation is to dive into Beard's "Benefits of Public Speaking Development: The Gifts that Keep on Giving." These are truly kernels of wisdom that only someone with this much lived experience could provide us - consider "...we are rewarded with self-confidence and self-acceptance, and we gradually lose the fear of being judged," "...we become authors and storytellers," or "when we give a speech concerning something about which we are passionate, we become known by others as caring individuals and our messages build our inner strength which, in turn, gives us greater interpersonal power." Beard has clearly learned a thing or two about the power of public speaking and it's clear that he wants to extend his reach to a larger audience through print! I am glad that he did. To be fair, I am immensely jealous that this guy "won a sales contest and was eventually on a Western Airlines flight to Mexico City"! What a "Flight to Freedom" that sounds like!
