Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-- In this Irish import, Simms draws heavily on historical writings as sources. The first section is based on Patrick's words about his life and spiritual experiences, and gives readers a sense of the man and his struggles. The second part is drawn from secondary sources, including the stories and legends that grew over time and have colored current knowledge about the subject. The writing is generally clear and interesting, although it presumes some awareness of religious objects and symbols. Among the black-and-white illustrations are reproductions of historical documents, maps, and dramatic drawings of incidents in Patrick's life. Tom Corfe's St. Patrick and Irish Christianity (Lerner, 1978; o.p.) also covers the development of the Irish church. The accounts differ on a few facts, not surprisingly, since there is no general accord on exactly what is true about this man's life. A useful addition for those seeking information on the subject. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
