About the Author

Shami Stovall grew up in California's central valley with a single mother and little brother. Despite no one in her family having a degree higher than a GED, she put herself through college (earning a BA in History), and then continued on to law school where she obtained her Juris Doctorate. As a child, Stovall enjoyed every portal fantasy, space opera, and magic series she could get her hands on, but the first novel to spark her imagination was Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. The adventure on a deserted island opened her mind to ideas and realities she had never given thought before-and it was the moment Stovall realized that story telling (specifically fiction) became her passion. Anything that told a story, especially fantasy series and military science fiction, be it a movie, book, video game or comic, she had to experience. Now, as a professor and author, Stovall wants to add her voice to the myriad of stories in the world. Everything from sorcerers, to robots, to fantasy wars--she just hopes you enjoy. I had the great privilege of editing Star Marque Rising, and I need you to know that this was hands down the best manuscript I have read in my years of editing. I don't say that lightly; I've read many good ones. Dozens, in fact. But Star Marque Rising made me feel things I haven't felt since the first time I read 1984. I am a complete sci-fi nerd, and this was the best example of modern sci-fi I've read since Wool by Hugh Howey. I can't think of any character I didn't like. Every character is painted with such a vivid brush. They are all so real. They all make such complete character arcs. I am incredibly honored to have been allowed to edit this wonderful book.

Really great - the story is a blast, the characters are awesome, and the end is one of the best in recent memory. Totally check this one out if you like any sci-fi.

Star Marque Rising is great space opera. It has everything needed for a fascinating story full of danger and adventure. The world building is very well written and the back story is blended into the action and dialogue. The character development is layered. There are the superhumans, the genetically modified humans, the plain humans and the humans with defects. Each play a role in the story. All of this is seen through the eyes of Clevon Demarco, one genetically modified human. His story starts when he joins the crew of the Star Marque. I enjoyed following him as he adjusted to a new life and changed how he reacted to the action in the story. A hard to put down plot that had a somewhat open ended conclusion.

I really enjoyed this story and cannot wait for more from this author, not just because she grew up somewhere close to where I grew up (lol - I think I was there 40 years before she was there since I am old). Anyway, her story alone is enough. Action-packed and with awesome characters, I will follow what else this author has to write about. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
