He and the crew of the Enterprise become caught up in the battle to possess this ruby gem, which leaves behind it a trail of blood as red as the devil's heart itself. In this tale of power and greed, aliens and humans alike are tempted by the endless power of the jewel. Carter has woven several individual story lines into a complex, textured, well-written plot and peopled it with three-dimensional characters. The Vulcans, with the exception of one appearance from Spock and his father, Sarek, haven't been much in evidence in "The Next Generation" TV series, but they dominate Carter's novel. The "Enterprise becomes involved when a party of Vulcans, led by the archaeologist and scholar T'Sara is reported dead on the barren planet Iconia. The deaths are the result of interplanetary rivalries over T'Sara's discovery of an ancient stone of wisdom and power, the Ko N'Ya--a stone containing the very essence of Vulcan, Romulan, and kindred races. The Ko N'Ya falls into Captain Picard's hands, and, inadvertently, he links with T'Sara and with the stone's great power. This tests his courage and his sagacity--but not to worry, he will prevail. Ferengis abound, and there are episodes, also, with every born-again Trekker's favorite adversary, the Borg. Carter renders Commander Riker as rather shallow and neurotic, while Couselor Troi and Dr. Crusher are given slightly larger roles than on the show; Troi, in particular, is highly sympathetic. Worf is given nothing to do but mouth ancient platitudes about war and Data, of course, is Data. But this is well done, for the most part, and fans will welcome all the Vulcan lore.
