Pianist Bill Charlap has gained critical accolades and become a musician’s musician through his inspired work with Gerry Mulligan, Phil Woods, and a host of others. Stardust finds the youngish stylist paying tribute to the work of the legendary composer Hoagy Carmichael. He’s assisted in this worthy endeavor by a host of prestigious guests, including Tony Bennett, Shirley Horn, Jim Hall, and Frank Wess. The two vocal performances -- Bennett on “I Get Along Without You Very Well” and Horn on “Stardust,” both in select form -- are gorgeous examples of the magic that can occur between singer and accompanying piano accompanist. The Hall and Wess tracks also find both veteran instrumentalists playing with verve and reacting to Charlap with the telepathic communication he customarily elicits from others. The tracks featuring the pianist and his regular trio (bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington) are on a par with the sterling guest performances. A highly enjoyable project from an extravagantly gifted pianist.
