Starflight to Destiny by Patrick Dearen

A deep-space archaeological dig shrouded in mystery . . . Clues to the location of a legendary power in the reaches of the galaxy . . . A man and a woman, each of them holding half the answers, both of them defying a totalitarian government.

Together, Blake Sharrel and Rhonda Gregory embark on a starship quest to find the Leijan, an enigma that holds the fate of the cosmos. It’s an epic journey filled with peril: a crew of pirates ready to slit their throats, a planet where intruders are crucified upside down, and a chase across countless light years of unexplored space.

From one planet’s Valley of the Skull to another planet’s City of the Skull, and on to a derelict spacecraft orbiting a black world, it will be a "Starflight to Destiny."

Starflight to Destiny By Patrick Dearen Review by Shaun Raymond Hoadley Starflight to Destiny harkens back to the early days of science fiction, when a more innocent approach to storytelling was prevalent, however it still retains a modern harder edge to it. It is of the type of science fiction as “the Stars My Destination” by Alfred Bester and “the Weapons Shops of Isher” by A. E. van Vogt. It is a genuine thrilling and utterly entertaining read. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys classic science fiction. It flows like a Alex Raymond or Hal Foster strip, and has all the elements of an Edgar Rice Burroughs story, honor, duty, romance and spiritual awakening. Although I had not previously read any of Mr. Dearen’s work, after reading Starflight to Destiny, I became an immediate fan! The book was well written and captivated the reader to the extent that I found myself unable to put it down! The protagonist, Blake is an everyman, who was once an up and coming officer only to have his values and integrity compromised by the actions of a woman he loved and the organization of which he was a part! The female protagonist was an intelligent yet naïve individual who was trying to follow in her archeologist father’s footsteps. The two are eventually brought together by circumstances beyond their collective control to undertake a quest to save the universe from a dire fate. Along the way, they are beset by a host of villainous opponents and unforeseen disasters often causing them to doubt their chances for success. However, all the adversity only serves to eventually strengthen their resolve to accomplish their lofty goal, while also restoring Blake’s faith in not only himself, but additionally in a higher power. He returns to his former self as he slowly discovers what true love is, instead of just desire. In the end, he becomes the being he was always destined be.
