This is a curious hybrid of space opera and fantasy. It is set in a future interstellar empire headquartered on Mars. However, the method of faster-than-light travel is based on magic. Of course, considering the technobabble that some science fiction writers use in justifying FTL travel, they might as well be magic. This writer goes all out and requires that each vessel capable of FTL carry at least one mage, hence the title. The title character is Damien Montgomery, a very talented and conscientious mage, who, unfortunately, has no family connections, so he has to take a position on a less than desirable freighter. At least the rules of magic are very well developed and consistent throughout the book. It was a very entertaining read. This author has read Heinlein. One of the ship’s stops is on a space station called “Heinlein’s Station”. The society is a combination of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, where there is a fee for everything, and Beyond This Horizon, where everyone carries a firearm.
