The local governmental branch of the legislature is explored in this nonfiction picture book. This volume is part of Capstone Press's "First Facts on Our Government" series. The pages feature a picture, text, and a fun fact. The pictures help illustrate the concepts while the fun facts give the reader an interesting tid-bit to contemplate, such as state legislators must live in the state they represent. The concepts, however, may challenge young readers as the book presents the information in haphazardly. For example, the first section discusses how children can help legislators. Then, an explanation of the legislative branch follows. The last section gives step-by-step instructions on how kids can contact their legislator. The first section seems to fit better towards the end. Also, while the pictures match the text, the front cover needs further consideration. The picture of the seated legislator right of the speaker may offend some teachers or parents. On the positive side, the book features a handy glossary, a list of reference books, and an Internet site for further research. Overall, this book presents valuable information, but it could use re-editing. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 5 to 8.
