Reviewed by Janelle Fila for Readers' Favorite Steel Maiden (Divided Realms Book 1) by Kim Richardson is a young adult fantasy and the first book in the Divided Realms series. In a land of banned magic, religious sects, and dark secrets, Elena hides her mysterious healing powers and hand to hand fighting abilities. When Elena is caught attempting to steal a valuable jewel, she is given one alternative to death. So she becomes the high priest's champion in The Great Race, throwing herself into the deadliest race in the realm. As Elena discovers more about her own secrets, she realizes the race's mysterious truth. It is up to her to stop the evil that looms over her homeland before it becomes too strong and consumes them all. This story is chock full of adventure, action, and sizzling romance. But it can also be creepy, with demons and monsters and evil priests vying for each other's souls. This story isn't for the faint of heart, but it is written with such richness that readers who give it a try will not be disappointed. The characters are strong and very well written, especially Elena and Mad Jack. Elena has a grim determination that readers will respect. She never gives up, even when she worries that she can't win. Everything she does is for her love of other characters, and that love is inspiring and contagious. Mad Jack is a complex character who keeps his story a little closer to his chest, but as readers begin to peel back layers, they will discover his wonderful complexity as well.

Elena is beautiful, she is special and she grew up in the Pit with all the other very poor people. Usually girls with her beauty are taken by the priests, but she was hidden for years by her mother's friend. Elena makes a bad decision, one that she thinks will get her and Rose out of poverty, and sets several things into motion. Elena believes she is betrayed by Mad Jack. She ends up in a race, is supposed to bring back a stone and then the high priest will spare Rose and all the people in the Pit. There are many trials along the way and she isn't too sure who she can trust.

Loved it. The story follows a young woman, Elena who decides to go after a crown, a precious artifact that would keep her and Rose from starving and living in filth. But when she steals it she’s caught, and the high priests force her by sending her on a Race for a stone that could change everything. The kingdoms fear the high priests, who have taken over all the realms and have outlawed magic, saying it's evil. Overall it's a decent story, with many twists and turns, death, love, and friendship, Elena leads the reader on an adventure unlike any other. Enjoyable, easy read.

Amazing! Loved the characters, plot, setting, hell pretty much everything about this book! I loved the character development of the heroine, so strong and independent. I recommend this book to those who liked the throne of glass series and the Tearling books.

FYU, I like to review about everything in the book, so there might be spoilers. I liked the idea of the story, where the underdog basass heroine is in charge of overcoming some great evil, but i felt it was really under-developed. The main character had little to no depth or development, and the supporting side characters were really flat. Don't get me wrong, i liked Mad Jack, but i felt as if he was someone in the background, not one of the big, life-altering characters he was supposed to be. The author could've added more scenes to show development between him and Elena. And regarding Elena, we are thrown into her life, and continue to get bursts of information like as if we were speeding by 100mph and had to catch the information being chucked at us from the sidelines. And the main plot of the Race, the Stone, and the Priests were more just thrown at you rather than woven in and revealed as mysterious. But all in all, not a terrible story. If possible, i would love to see it re-edited by the author to see more development of the plot and characters. Especially the characters. *This book was free from nook
