Read an Excerpt

So what makes this stencil book so different than one I purchased in 1977? Good question. For starters, it doesn't contain any pineapples, geese with bows or a woman in a kitschy little apron ready to stencil a strawberry on a box. Stenciling from the Arts and Crafts movement took a different turn. Yes, there were various forms of fruit and you may uncover a goose (no bow around the neck though), but none of these motifs would bear much resemblance to their real life counterpart. Artists from this period used designs that emphasized motifs from nature, but the images took on a stylized form and a more simplistic form of nature. Often what turned these simple designs into works of art were the various techniques used to apply them to whatever they adorned.
