Overview

Steps in My Shoes is a true account of my journey through the foster care system and beyond. Going through four foster homes, two adoptive homes, five behavioral facilities, and battling with reactive attachment disorder (RAD), and sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) certainly taught me a lot.The abysmal college graduation rate of less than 3% for foster youth did not prevent me from bagging a bachelor's degree and becoming a licensed teacher. If I could go through all that and still found the courage to become a teacher and author, then I believe other foster youth can too.Reading this book will totally educate you on what an average child in the foster care system passes through on a daily basis. This intriguing book is a must have for teachers, social workers, foster/adoptive parents, people considering being foster/adoptive parents, and current/past foster and adopted youth.

About the Author

I have been going back and forth about writing about my experiences for over 12 years. Was overcoming some difficult hurdles really worth writing about when there is so much suffering in the world? How much could my story really help people? I finally overcame my doubts when I thought about the people I could help inspire to overcome similar obstacles. I also wanted to raise awareness about challenges facing over half a million former and current foster youth.

I am in a position to help inspire foster youth so everyone involved can start changing the horrible statistics that are currently a reality. I hope my story helps foster youth see that they too can accomplish their goals despite having a difficult childhood and/or adolescence. Adults who work with foster youth can use my story to motivate foster youth to follow their dreams. Sometimes seeing an example of someone who has already overcome the odds is what it takes to create further positive progress.

I intentionally wrote this book to be a brief overview of my life. The kids my book could help already know the intricacies of what it feels like to be in foster care. They are or have already lived through it themselves. I am happy to spread awareness, but my main goal is to inspire others suffering like I did. A brief story is hopefully the correct tool for connecting with kids in similar circumstances.

I also understand that some would prefer a more in-depth look. If I have enough questions from readers who want more in-depth information, then I will turn my answers into blog posts for everyone to learn from (in addition to answering directly). I am also interested in helping spread knowledge and/or inspiration through speeches or training.
