Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Summer is almost over and it’s time to start preparing for the new school year. My daughter will start Kindergarten this year and it’s going to be a big step for both of us! We’ve talked about the things she’ll do in Kindergarten and she’s super excited and a little bit scared to go. I am always looking for new ways to share with her the things she’s going to be doing at school to help ease some of her fears. “Stewie Boomstein Starts School” by Christine Bronstein and Illustrated by Karen Young is an excellent story to read to children that are preparing to enter pre-k or kindergarten. Stewie Boomstein is a likeable and believable character. He just has one serious problem, he had a very bad first day of school. All day long when his teacher wanted him to do one thing, he always wanted to do another! Stewie didn’t like not knowing what was going to happen next. The unexpected and unknown bothered him and it made the whole day hard to deal with. By the end of the day Stewie had enough and he was very cranky. When he arrived home his family worked together to solve Stewies problem and the results are extraordinary. Stewie has a fantastic second day school. I see a lot of personality traits of my daughter in Stewie. The unknown and unexpected really bother her. She loves to know what is going to happen next. While reading the book my daughter and we chatted about the things she is going to do in kindergarten too. We talked about how her new school will have a weekly schedule so she’ll know roughly what is going to happen each day. The book helped open a dialogue on the new experiences she is going to encounter in her Kindergarten. The story was easy to read out loud and the illustrations in the book are adorable. My daughter loved the picture of Princess Penelope hugging Stewie. Often times when I read a children’s story the text is hard to read as it is typed over various colourful illustrations, the text in “Stewie Boomstein Starts School” is written on an image of a piece of paper taped to a wall making it very easy to read. The end of the book was very interesting to me as a parent of a child starting kindergarten. It is a series of questions on “How to Prepare You and Your Child for School”. The experts share various ways of preparing not only your child for school, but also on how to prepare yourself for your child starting school. They also include your own “What Happens Next Chart”follow to fill out with your child. “Stewie Boomstein Starts School” is a great story to read at bedtime…or anytime to start preparing your little one for their new adventures in school!
