I realized my boyhood dream in 1968. I began taking flying lessons. As romantic and exciting as my first hours in the "Third Dimension" were, they were also awkward, fumbling and frustrating. I just didn't "get it". My ground-bound senses and sensibilities crippled my ability to progress beyond a crude, rote repetition of my instructor's movements. Then, at the local public library, I discovered Stick and Rudder, Wolfgang Langewiesche's wonderfully friendly explanation of the art of flying. This deceptively simple-seeming book was, quite literally and literarily, the most effective and influential flight instructor I've ever had. What distinguishes Stick and Rudder from so many other aviation texts is its accessibility. While profoundly instructive, it is actually entertaining to read. And, so are the two other well-recognized companion classics by Messrs. Taylor and Buck in this excellent box set. That's why I've bought probably two dozen copies of each volume over the years, and have given them to special flying friends and flight students. Read and absorb these three books and you WILL be a better pilot. You'll also feel as if you've made three wonderful new friends.
