"The funniest deputy coroner to cut up a corpse since, well, ever." —Laura Levine

Every fall, hunting season in Sorenson, Wisconsin, leads to some accidental injuries. Deputy coroner Mattie Winston just hopes the hunters don't bring any more business to her office. But somebody seems to have declared open season on land developers. One real estate developer who's recently come to town has been found dead in the woods with an arrow through his neck. Now it's up to Mattie to get to the bottom of the killing. That might be easier if she wasn't also hunting for Detective Hurley's teenage daughter, Emily, who has suddenly disappeared. With a homicidal William Tell out on the loose, Mattie is desperate to find Emily before the killer notches another arrow. . .

A bit graphic but then Mattie is assistant to the coroner, after all. You'll love hoover and rubbish her pets . Very enjoyable book.

Good mystery with a fine cast of characters.

That might make think I didn’t love this book, but you would be wrong. It keeps you guessing right up to the end. Great read.

Decent book but the murder mystery takes too much of a back seat to Mattie and Hurley's personal issues. Also, it annoyed me how the author chose to portray the school. She needs to find out what the legal responsibilities of a school are before writing about them. Stephanie Clanahan

Enjoyed the books prior to this more, less suspense in this book. Still a fun book to read. Hope there will be more in this series.

Loved the characters although the amazon references became a bit tiresome and felt like ads at times

Stiff Competition by Annelise Ryan is the seventh book in the Mattie Winston Mysteries. Stiff Competition picks up eight weeks after the last book in the series. Mattie Winston has had her baby (named Matthew Hurley) and it is her first day back at work. She is called out to a crime scene in the woods. Lars Sanderson, the real estate developer, is the victim. There are many suspects because many people were not happy with Lars business practices (he was building strip malls and cheap condos) and his womanizing ways. Mattie will be busy trying to solve the case and adapt to being a single mother. Mattie and her boyfriend (and baby daddy) Steve Hurley have not been able to move into together because of Emily! Emily is the daughter Steve did not know he had until recently. Emily is fifteen and a handful. She resents Mattie and is making life as difficult as possible for Steve and Mattie. Then Emily disappears. Matt wonders if Emily went back to Milwaukee where she used to live with her mother. Mattie searches Sorenson (Wisconsin) for Emily. Mattie has a feeling that there is more to Emily’s disappearance than an upset teenage girl. Will they be able to find Emily in time? I enjoyed Stiff Competition much more than the previous book in the series (which I only gave 3 out of 5 stars). I thought I would give the series another chance, and I am glad that I did. The book starts out a little slow (with a lot of whining), but it gets much better. The murder mystery (as well as Emily’s disappearance) are easy to solve, but there are some good clues to follow. I did feel that Emily’s disappearance dominated the book. The murder of Lars Sanderson took a back seat in the novel. I really feel bad for Steve Hurley. Hurley, once again, played a small role. I hope he plays a bigger part in the next book (and that Mattie is less hormonal). Overall, Stiff Competition was a good cozy mystery. I give Stiff Competition 4 out of 5 stars. I received a complimentary copy of Stiff Competition from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Great Series! This is a great series; this is the seventh book in the Mattie Winston Mysteries series by Annelise Ryan. Mattie Winston is the Deputy coroner in Sorenson, Wisconsin. Every fall during hunting season there are accidental injuries, and she is hoping to have a quiet season. When a real estate developer who is new to town is found dead in the woods it is up to her to find the killer before they hurt someone else. If you are looking for a great mystery then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Once again I had a great visit with Mattie Winston, her new baby boy, and all of her friends. Annelise Ryan has written another fast paced, entertaining story, When I read the first book in the series, Working Stiff, I had a slight problem seeing Mattie as a deputy coroner,Mattie has filled the role so well that I would be comfortable attending an autopsy with her. Annelise's books are so vividly told, that at times I forget and just want to join Mattie for a day. FTC Full Disclosure - A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

It has been quite a while since I've read this series. I was immediately drawn in to the story and it felt like I was catching up with old friends. Mattie is trying to find the balance between work, a new baby, and her rocky relationship with Steve Hurley. Not only is Mattie a new mother to her son Matthew, but Hurley is now the sole parent of angst ridden teen Emily. When a shady community member is killed, it is up to Hurley and Mattie to put the puzzle pieces together. When Emily appears to have run away, Mattie is not sure that a normal family life will ever develop with her and Hurley. With the cards stacked against her, Mattie stays strong and fights to find the answers. I enjoyed this story very much and I look forward to reading the earlier books in the series. The author kept me entertained with the witty dialogue and I loved the reactions from the other characters when Mattie opted for a new look. I definitely recommend this book to others.
