Stilettos & Scoundrels by Laina Turner-Molaski

Presley Thurman, a sassy, thirty-something red-head, was looking to reinvent herself. She didn't allow the fact she was recently fired to bother her - she was ready to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a writer. Presley is a lover of shopping and Starbucks, and even though she sometimes had bad taste in men, she always had great taste in clothes. Not looking back on corporate America, Presley decided to follow her dream. With her feisty nature and a spirit to not "sweat the small stuff," she was ready to tackle any challenge (even if she had no idea how she would pay the bills). When her friend Trevor offered her a job with his online magazine to interview public figures, she jumped at the chance. However, the new job turned into something unexpected when the U.S. Senator she was slated to write about was murdered - in her home town! Presley was excited - she hadn't seen so much buzz since the spring sample sale at Saks. She was ready for this adventure, even if it didn't seem to fit neatly into her life. She couldn't pass up the opportunity to be in the middle of the buzz. Presley was determined (not to mention curious) to find the killer and write her story. After all, she couldn't afford her shoe habit without a job and she was certainly not one to shy away from danger. The only thing standing in her way was an old high school fling, Cooper Sands, head of the Senator's security. He was not actually standing in her way, but because of his good looks, he was the biggest distraction and one she was having the hardest time overcoming. Cooper felt it was too dangerous for Presley to look for a killer and tried to distract her with reliving the past; which Presley found more dangerous than any killer. While she attempted to resist Cooper's good looks and charm, Presley was able to discover the Senator's wife, Helen, had been having an affair... with her best friend's boyfriend! Did Helen kill the Senator? Or was it the Senator's love of gambling that got him killed? And what was Cooper's secret tie to the mob boss Garrison Palazzo? Presley was betting her favorite pair of Manolo's she will find the killer... but will time run out!

Review by JoAnne: This was more chick lit than a mystery but it was a fun read. It was sometimes confusing when most of the characters were involved in the same scene. Presley was the quirkiest sleuth I've ever met, but nothing seemed to phase her. She stuck her nose in everywhere it didn't belong but didn't seem to care. You couldn't help but like her. I laughed quite a few times at her antics and couldn't believe she would get away with her actions. I would recommend this book if you're looking for something light. At the end of the book there was an excerpt from the next "case" she was asked to help solve. I'll give that book a try too. Quote: "This is what I was thinking Katy. Presley leaned in closer. If I can figure out who killed Senator Daniels first, then they will both be happy and there's no need for them to know about what I saw and didn't tell them. Think about it. This could be my big break. I'm smarter than they are. I can solve this thing."

Loved the plot and mystery involved and the story definitely kept moving and kept you guessing as to what happened. At times though the pace and writing was just a little bit awkward. While mostly the story was told from Presley point of view, there were a couple of instances when for just a paragraph you were in the head of one of the other characters. Presley as a character had good and bad points. Shes fun, friendly, determined but at times a bit whiny and too caught up in what shes wearing. I appreciate fashion consciousness and all but at times it was almost too much. Cooper was a great character. I hope we see him again. He sounds like he has quite an interesting background of his own that it would be fun to learn more about. If you are looking for an easy to read mystery that is well plotted out and with some interesting characters. This is a good one to pick up.

Presley Thurman have returned to her hometown for an interview assignment. She was supposed to interview Senator Tom Daniels, until he was found murdered. Presley embarks on an investigation to find the identity of the murderer. Along the way, plenty of secrets are revealed. including those from the past. But this will not stop Presley from finding out the truth, no matter what the costs are. Stilettos & Scoundrels had a good murder mystery plot but unfortunately, the prose was horrible. Past tense were used at the wrong places, the story was over-narrated and too many "blah, blah, blah"s and "whatever"s were used. Furthermore, although Presley is the heroine in the story, I found her quite a turn-off, mean jerk. She lied, thought too much of herself, was rude, impatient and generally too big-mouthed. For the sake of the wonderfully plotted mystery, I found Stilettos & Scoundrels a bearable read but this isn't a book I will re-read.

Laina Turner-Molaski has got some GREAT writing skills. I was really surprised to see how good her writing really was. She blends the perfect amount of suspense with the perfect amount of chick lit, and turns out a book for her readers that is totally engaging! Presley Thurman is a character I can relate to in SO many ways! She LOVES shoes. So do I! I loved that part of the story. But, anyway, she's just wanting to live her life for herself, and her boss. Well, he thinks that she should do EXACTLY what he tells her.....and when she won't do it, he fires her. Forced to find another job, she takes on writing. And what's even better is that her first writing assignment is to write about the NOW murdered Senator. She can't wait to take THAT job on and find out who the killer is. But, what she didn't bargain for was the hot, steamy sparks that fly when her high school flame, Cooper is none of than the head of said dead Senator's security. Between the sparks, the shoes and shopping, and the mystery of finding out who killed the man she was to write about, this is one 4 star chick lit novel! I do recommend it to everyone who loves that bit of suspense that carries you just enough to keep you guessing , loves that chick lit aspect that you can relate to the female lead, and loves quirky, witty, funny characters that will keep you smiling through the story. I definitely would read another novel like this from this author!

STILETTOS&SCOUNDRELS by Laina Turner-Molaski is an interesting chick lit/suspense/mystery/romance.It has a large cast of characters each one with their own insight into the problems, and their own way of thinking. It is well written with details and style. This is a quirky tale of murder, mystery, fashion, chick lit spin, climbing the corporate ladder, sensual harassment by an employer, scandals, and adventure. Presley has adventures abound,is fired from her job after refusing to slept with her boss and finds a dead senator.Cooper,is to protect a senator, who of course of found dead, had an attraction to Presley in high school and must find a killer before any harm can come to Presley. A wonderful and quirky who dun it with a chick lit spin! I fell in love with Presley Thurman from page one and couldn't wait to hear all about her adventures. The large cast of characters was hard at times to remember who was linked with whom, but once it was all settled I couldn't find out who was the killer and why they committed the murder. I had my thoughts and debated a few times, but in the end she got me and I couldn't wait to find out all the details! The one thing that I didn't fall in love with was the random times it switched to another's persons thoughts or head. I would be reading along and then all of the sudden I would be hearing how a different character was thinking about what they were encoutering with Presley. A little confusing and made for some moments of wonder. I would absolutely recommend it to those who love a little suspense and love a little chick lit when they pick up a book. Any murder using a shoe is worth reading in my book!

Stilettos & Scoundrels by Laina Turner-Molaski is a quirky tale with all of the essentials: murder, mystery and great fashion! Presley Thurman is just your average single female trying to make her way up the corporate ladder while looking the best she possibly can. So when her boss fires her after she refuses his advances, she naturally prepares thinking of ways she can have a career and her shoe collection at the same time. Quickly being offered a job for a newspaper, Presley heads to her small hometown where she is to write an article about a local Senator. Dressed to impress, she sets off on what she expects to be an easy endeavor, only to have the tables turned when the Senator is found murdered. Presley quickly takes advantage of the situation in hopes of writing the piece of a lifetime. Cooper Sands is not only extremely charming and sexy, but he happens to be in charge of protecting the Senator while he is in town. When his job brings him face to face with Presley, the connection that sparked to life in high school is back and hotter than ever. Cooper must find a way to solve the murder and keep the stubborn Presley out of harms way. Stilettos & Scoundrels is written in third person and is mainly from Presley's point of view. There are only a few paragraphs throughout the book that are from the perspective of other characters and I feel as though this prevented me from getting to know what some of the other characters were really about. Although this did add to the mystery in some ways so it works out well with the story line. And there is plenty of mystery to go around! Just when I was getting comfortable thinking I knew who the murderer was, new scandals and clues were thrown in to throw me off of the trail.
