What a ride!!! From the serial-killer-prologue to the very last pages I could not tell who it was - even though there were plenty of great characters to choose from! Shiela McGraw has written a serial-killer mystery that had me laughing out loud; a pretty amazing feat! And while I made plenty of guesses along the way, I did not know who it was until the very end. I literally couldn't put this book down. The protagonist, Sylvia Drake, is a self-sufficient artist, who finds herself dragged into helping her very dependant, somewhat maddening, friend, Fiona. But it isn't easy. Although the friendship is a holdover from childhood days, when Fiona shows up on Sylvia's doorstep pregnant and with no resources to speak of, Sylvia can't say no. Fiona has left Terry, her perennially cheating, sex-addicted husband (once and for all?) because she is sure he tried to kill her. Reporting the botched murder attempt to the sexy Detective Martial doesn't seem to accomplish much, and hiring Shane Holmes, a private investigator, just confirms what Fiona already knows. So while the depressed, hormonal, and unfortunately undecided Fiona sits on the fence watching television, Sylvia is off and running to help Fiona salvage a life she can call her own. However, unbeknownst to Sylvia or Fiona, there is unsuspected jeopardy lurking on the path to Fiona's salvation in the form of a serial killer who has previously managed to stay off the police charts. In the process of seeking the truth about Terry and his murderous intentions, Sylvia unwittingly draws the attention of said serial killer, and the game is on! Sylvia and Fiona become like the mice under the cat's nose in the still life she is painting in between bouts of detecting. This first Sylvia Drake novel will suck you in so fast you'll think her new Roomba got free from the pages, and by the time you turn the last page you will already be begging for the next book in the series. Serial killer who is a woman, but sees herself as a man, and that's part of why you can't guess who it is.
