Overview

Anyone unfamiliar or even slightly unfamiliar with Jesper Dahlbäck might find him- or herself pleasantly surprised by The Stockholm Mix Sessions. Most associate Stockholm, and probably Sweden in general, with techno -- hard techno, the kind of wall-shaking percussive techno produced by guys like Adam Beyer and released on labels like Drumcode. But there is a deep house scene in Sweden, believe it or not, and it's damn good. Moreover, Dahlbäck functions as the scene's figurehead, being not only a producer and DJ but also the man behind the stellar Svek label. So make no mistake, even though Dahlbäck's from the land of hard, icy techno, he's one of house music's most gifted talents. Knowing this, you shouldn't be too surprised to learn that The Stockholm Mix Sessions is one of the best deep house mixes released in 1999, and quite possibly one of the best released in the late '90s. You could say that Dahlbäck drops amazing tracks: "Beau Mot Plage" never seems to lose its allure, no matter how overplayed it may be, and the plethora of heartfelt vocal tracks spread across the mix -- Blue Six's "Sweeter Love," the Rurals' "No Sunshine," Jii Hoo's "Let Me Luv U," and Dahlbäck's remix of ADNY's "Life" -- are some of the best the genre has to offer. Sure, anyone could drop tracks like this and wow an audience. But Dahlbäck takes it one step further by applying a genius sense of mixing -- a true sign of his talent. A little over ten minutes into the set he mixes "Beau Mot Plage" into a vocal mix of "Sweeter Love"; this is a highlight, for sure, yet Dahlbäck doesn't stop there and keeps bringing back in the vocals from "Sweeter Love" throughout "Beau Mot Plage" -- two stunning tracks made even more stunning. This is just one example; there are many others. It's difficult to determine what's the true highlight of this mix, the tracks or the mixing -- or perhaps even the sequencing. Aspiring DJs take heed: this is how to spin a great house set.
