After years of trying to discern which bird was which from the not so revealing photos in my very old Audubon bird guide I decided to find a better book. I'm thrilled I chose this one! I can actually see what the birds look like, including at different stages of their lives, from the wonderful variety of color photos. And beneath the photos is a concise description of everything I'd ever want to know about a particular bird's appearance, habitat, song sounds, and a tiny map inset of its range. There is a bonus CD included, with over "600 sounds and songs of 150 common birds..." This guide is packed with beautifully organized information and printed on heavy stock pages that are made to last.

I picked this book up in the store because of it's amazing photographs. I love that each bird has no less than 3 photos to help identify the birds you're looking at. However, it is most certainly NOT "portable enough to fit in your pocket", as listed in the description above. The thing weighs nearly 3 lbs. So be forewarned - it's a GREAT book, but it is NOT portable.

The photos are sharp and clear of the birds, number of photos taken of different stages of the bird life is great learning tool. The range maps are nice addition, since I live in middle of USA there times I see birds from western states and now then birds from Texas and the gulf states. The book is not for the beginner but for the one with good working skills in watching birds. I enjoy watching the birds out my window and how the birds change over the seasons.

Very educational. I'm a beginner at birding and this book is everything I could have ever wanted. It's a big book - 1 1/2 inches thick. It also includes a bonus CD with a lot of bird calls and sounds. I have uploaded to my iPhone. You could also put the CD is your car. I would say that this book is perfect for the seasoned birder or the people who are just starting out.

This is the book to have with the best photographs available and of the highest quality.. Donald and Lillian Stokes outdid themselves with this book... Simply the finest... Go to Barnes & Noble and have a look for yourselves, you'll want a copy too... I cannot do this book justice with words, you simply must experience it...
