In 1816 after the poisoned milk killed her son¿s puppy, widow Princess Callie, knowing her offspring was the intended victim, flees with her seven years old child, Zindaria Crown Prince Nicky to England planning to hide in the home of her retired governess. She and the child make it to the English shore with little hope of going much further. The second son an Earl, war veteran formerly of the Fourteenth Light Dragoon Gabriel Renfrew, happens to be riding at breakneck speed when he spots the woman and her offspring. Gabriel provides shelter to Callie and her son although he knows she is hiding much from him. When an assassin tries to kill them, Gabriel protects them. He offers her marriage as he can truly keep mother and child safe. As she considers his proposal, she fears for her heart as she has fallen in love for that matter so has Gabriel, no longer a daredevil as he has someone to live for, but a throne stands in their way. --- The first Devil Riders¿ historical romance is an action-packed Regency thriller starring two strong protagonists and contains just enough suspense to hook the readers into wondering what comes next. Callie¿s prime objective is to keep Nicky safe while Gabe no longer cares suffering from posttraumatic syndrome caused by his war experience. Their forbidden love makes for a charming tale as Gabe turns from a 24/7 devil rider into a 24/7 loving protecting husband-father. Fans already know that Anne Gracie writes ¿Perfect¿ early nineteenth century romances. --- Harriet Klausner

Nice fluffy little romance. She's a little too...tame? to be believable when she flares up, and a little too wild to be convincing when she goes along with what she's told to do - but on the other hand, she's not given a lot of options in most cases. Mostly because when she does have options she chooses some rather silly ones - going back to the house...sheesh. And her flareups are all in defense of her son (and it's a very good thing for him that she _wasn't_ left in sole charge of him for very long - poor kid). The kidnapping is scary and the solution is wonderful - both the boy's actions and the reason they worked. The villain got his comeuppance properly, with nothing saved for the future (whew). This is the first of a series, and I'll be looking for the rest. I like some of Gracie's stuff, and some drives me nuts; it's just a matter of try each and find out.

Regency romance author Anne Gracie is one of my guilty pleasures. Her stories are sweet yet with enough spice to keep my more prurient tendencies happy. I know there will be a happy ending, none of the 'good guys' will die, and the 'bad guys' will always get their just desserts. What I think we all wish 'real life' could be.Her newest series is the story of the 'Devil Riders', four soldiers trying to readjust to civilian life. Our first hero is Gabriel who is restless and becoming bored with civilian life until he rescues a beautiful woman and young child. Suddenly his life is filled with action, confusion, and desire.Callie is a princess in hiding trying to save the life of her son, the heir. Men have always disappointed Callie...until she's rescued, again and again, by a man who seems to want nothing more than, well, Callie! This is Cinderella and the Three Musketeers in one spicy story. What's not to love?

While this book is fun to read, it's also a little bit annoying and silly. I don't really like Callie - she's annoying, conceited, and not really likable in any way at all. Which makes it hard to understand exactly why Gabriel falls for her so hard. And the princess thing is also kind of silly as well. Actually, the whole plot is rather silly, but if you can suspend disbelief long enough, this book is tolerably enjoyable.

While this book shares some troupes with other Gracie books (knight in shining armor, big dog, even a the beach), it is really lovely how  the Hero loves the Heroine and how we see the heroine grow up in terms of knowing love is risk.  I do wish the secondary romance had been resolved a bit more and there was a little bit more following the last chapter but I suppose the next book will have that. If you are a Gracie fan this book delivers.  If you like, these themes, this book has them!
