As a building material, natural stone is unrivaled in warmth, unyielding strength, and lasting resilience. From the earliest marble and limestone slabs, to the most detailed mosaic tiling, stone has played a vital part in construction, architecture, and interior design throughout history. Today, many people believe that only the extremely wealthy can include stone in their decorating schemes, but using modern technology, one can easily cut the costs of stone purchase and installation without compromising quality or design. Whether used to create a new bathroom shower, a kitchen countertop, a tiled floor, or fireplace surround, stone adds impact and can last a lifetime. With Stone, industry experts Heather and Earl G. Adams, Jr. have created the perfect compendium for anyone looking to remodel, update, or add stunning details to their home.
Since stone is a natural substance it can be said that no two slabs are alike, from color variations and veining characteristics, to sealed, varnished, or un-filled, one type of stone can have hundreds of different potentials. Stone features an all-inclusive color chart of different types of stone -- such as granite, marble, limestone, slate, and travertine -- each expressing differing characteristics to help you make the best choices for your lifestyle. The authors break down the pros and cons of each type of stone to help you make the right decisions, discussing everything from slippery when wet conditions to avoiding scratches and stains. Whether it is a slab of slate or a single tile of travertine they guide you through browsing, purchasing, and contracting the installation of natural stone in your home. Special instructions for ambitious do-it-yourselfers are included as well. A comprehensive glossary of terms along with a directory of stone showrooms, designers, and specialty stores makes this book as practical as it is artistic.

I found the 'do it yourself' stone installation section extremely helpful, as I am planning to lay my own tiles. If you plan to use natural stone in your kitchen, bathroom, on the floor, or anywhere in your home, get this book first and read it cover to cover!
I received this book as a gift and am so glad I did. It is so much more than one might think just by the title and cover. It is an in-depth study of creative uses of stone in custom residential architecture. Loaded with fabulous color photos--the bath, kitchen and flooring ideas just set my mind to racing. The back of the book has a nice color index of various types of stone products available--quite helpful. Lots of tips on how to choose the right product for the right application. The example of mosaics and floor designs would be a nice reference for those who do concrete acid stain or mosaics no matter what the medium. You're not gonna be happy with sheetrock once you see this book!!!!
