Ben Abbott, the Connecticut real estate agent is a former Naval Intelligence office and former Wall Street trader who had to spend 3 years in prison for some securities problem that may or may not have been his fault. All of which is just background on this amateur sleuth who undertakes an inquiry into a friend¿s apparent OD only to find an ever deeper web of conspiracy amongst his Newbury friends. Along the way he confronts, with mixed success, criminal drug dealers, bikers and various townsfolk who may or may not be on his side. The story is layered, and we follow Ben¿s dawning realization, sometimes ahead of his own suspicions, as he doggedly pursues the truth. There is some nice stuff about his own character and his relationships, romantic and familial, which contribute to his appeal as a protagonist. Though one might draw parallels with Spenser, this is an original character that has more depth and believability. Nice stuff.
