CHAPTER 1

REST

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.

GENESIS 2:2

It's not a coincidence that so much emphasis is placed on rest in the Bible. God designed our bodies to restore and recharge themselves through sleep. Even he rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). This simple act was important at the dawn of Creation, and it's still important now. When we sleep, our brains actually "clean" themselves. They hit the reset button and ready themselves for another day. Anytime we get fewer than seven hours of sleep, we lessen our capacity to think clearly. Simply put, when our brains don't get enough rest, they start making mistakes. If you want to keep your brain healthy and happy, make sure to get plenty of sleep.

Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

MATTHEW 11:28

The Lord replied, "I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest — everything will be fine for you."

EXODUS 33:14

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

MATTHEW 11:29

You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest.

EXODUS 34:21

Be still, and know that I am God!

PSALM 46:10

I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.

JEREMIAH 31:25

Youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.

ISAIAH 40:30-31

Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

EXODUS 20:8

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

PSALM 4:8

I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me.

PSALM 3:5

Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength.

ISAIAH 30:15

Increasingly people in our society are diagnosed with some form of dementia. Daniel Amen has two new books designed to help people at risk for memory problems to makes changes to improve their odds of not getting memory-related disease. Memory Rescue is Amen's main new book with detailed steps to improve brain health. Stones of Remembrance is designed as a companion book to help Christians, in particular, contribute to a healthier mind through Scripture memorization. Stones of Remembrance is a small book that would be easy to carry along for memorization and mediation on Scripture to inspire, comfort and challenge believers in all walks of life. This little book starts out with an inspiring introduction from Stephen Arterburn on how Dr. Amen helped him with his brain issues. There are three sections to this book: The Twelve Spiritual Disciplines for improving your memory, The Twelve verses to remember when. . . , and The Twelve Verses every Christian Should Know. I am so glad that Dr. Amen added this resource to the brain health books he has written. I memorized Scripture when I was a new Christian and I still remember those verses. However, in recent years, I haven't taken the time to work on Scripture memory. This book inspires me to start again so that I can not only see spiritual benefits but brain health benefits as well. I would recommend Christians get this companion resource to Memory Rescue. They might even make a nice gift set together for someone concerned about brain health too. I received Stones of Remembrance from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for the book.

Don’t let the size of this book fool you. It is packed with encouragement and techniques to use for healing the brain. Don’t underestimate the power of quiet contemplation. These pages are filled with it. In Part 1, Amen lays out 12 spiritual disciplines (rest, meditation and prayer, enjoyment, etc.) including explanations of why each is important and Bible passages to contemplate and memorize. Part 2 offers verses to remember when one is anxious, grateful, afraid, tired, etc. The book closes with the 12 verses every Christian should know. I am happy to report that I know most of them. Yes, I will be reviewing them. I need to keep these fresh in my mind. Purchase this book for the worried people in your life, those who are under a great deal of stress and those who need encouragement.

In his introduction to this special book, Dr. Amen tells us that God designed our minds to work—to remember. "It's been that way from the very beginning. "All throughout the Bible, we are encouraged—and even commanded—to remember. Stones of Remembrance—Healing Scriptures for Your Mind, Body, and Soul will help you to do just that—heal. This is a small book. Just 117 pages. It is well written and easy to read. If you need to improve your memory, and most of us do, this book will be a great help. Part 1 is twelve spiritual disciplines for improving memory. They include rest, exercise, eating healthy, meditation and prayer and eight more needed disciplines. In part 2 Dr. Amen gives verses to remember when you are anxious, grateful, afraid, depressed, sick, angry, and nine more. And I especially like part 3 The Twelve Verses Every Christian Should Know. The books ends with three Appendix. Three tips and exercises to help improve your memory and memorization. I don't think I am alone in needing this help. This is a book that will be a blessing to you and one that you will want to give as a gift
