Overview

This book is about Sally Kern, District 84 House of Representatives member from Oklahoma, and her desire to see America return to the conservative principles that guided the nation’s founders. In January 2008, the pastor’s wife and former high school teacher gave a speech to a Republican club in Oklahoma City explaining that the founding fathers believed Christian principles would lead to a civilized society, individual self-government, good citizens, the elevation of learning, and a cohesive value system. While explaining the fifth benefit, a cohesive value system, she told of a group of wealthy homosexual activists who threatened the nation’s moral fabric by attempting to unseat seventy conservative politicians who opposed their agenda. Clips from the speech later were posted on YouTube, generating more than 2 million hits and leading to what she describes as a media “stoning.” That didn’t stop her from winning re-election or from continuing her calls for America to return to the conservative principles that made it great. In this book she warns that there is danger ahead if social conservatives don’t preserve the nation’s foundations of morality, truth, and tolerance. She issues a cry for conservatives to stand for their freedom now before they no longer have the right to do so.

About the Author

Sally Kern was first elected to the Oklahoma State House of Representatives on November 2, 2004. Sally and her husband, Dr. Stephen D. Kern, a Southern Baptist minister, were married in 1970 and have two grown sons, one daughter-in-law, and one grandson. Prior to her election, Sally taught school about 20 years. Since Sally is an educator, her priorities in the House revolve around education, and she has served on various education-related committees in the House. Sally received a B.A. in sociology from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1971 and received her teacher certification in social studies with an emphasis in government from East Texas State University in 1986. After her first session in office, Sally was voted “Outstanding Lawmaker of the Year 2005” by the Oklahoma Conservative Political Action Committee (OCPAC) for her conservative voting record. In April of 2008, Sally was honored as the first ever recipient of the Family Research Council’s (FCR) “Champion of Faith, Family, and Freedom Award.”

Introduction

Introduction begins with receipt of thousands of hate e-mails as a result of her taking a public stand opposing the political agenda of a group of homosexual activists.

1 “Good Lord, What Have I Done?”

The author describes the speech she gave in January 2008 explaining the conservative principles the nation was founded on and how a group of wealthy homosexual activists threatened the fifth principle—a cohesive value system. She describes how she was barraged with hate mail from around the world after her comments were posted on YouTube, and explains that this type of attack is becoming par for the course for those who refuse to acquiesce to the Left’s secular, liberal agenda.

2 The Reluctant Candidate

This chapter gives the background on her personal and political life. It shows the level of political stoning that has taken place—including daily name-calling, vulgar Internet lies, and threats of physical harm—as well as the support she received from thousands that ultimately led to her re-election.

3 Caution! Danger Ahead!

The author deals with a fundamental issue resulting from her experiences: Do Bible-believing Christians in today’s politically correct America still have the freedom to stand for biblical principles in the public square? Drawing from contemporary examples, Kern describes the battle under way between secular humanism and biblical Christianity.

4 From Tyranny to Tyranny

The author examines liberal trends in England and argues that if America abandons the conservative principles that have protected our freedom, we may be headed in the same direction, toward a new tyranny that suppresses free speech and religious freedom.

5 The Assault on Freedom

Kern shows how America’s founding principles are already under assault and describes various legislative moves that could silence social conservatives.

6 A Christian Nation?

The author looks more closely at the Christian principles that influenced the nation’s founding fathers and its founding documents. She explains what conservatism is and discusses the biblical principles that undergird each of its legs (social policy, fiscal policy, and national security).

7 The War in Our Schools

Drawing from her experience as a high school government teacher, the author examines how liberals are using the education system to indoctrinate students with a secular ideology aimed at turning them away from the nation’s Christian roots and many of its founding principles.

8 Morality, Truth, and Tolerance

This chapter cites the actions Sally Kern and Oklahoma have taken to shore up the foundation for absolute truth in America and states the need for Americans throughout the nation to realize the need to become actively involved in preserving America’s foundations of morality, truth, and tolerance.

Conclusion: Fall Back? Not Hardly

Kern outlines how readers can get actively involved in bringing change, setting the biblical principles for supporting our foundational tenets in place and providing practical tools for reader engagement.
