Overview

A deadly storm, a missing three-year-old child, a grisly murder, and the eerie presence of the spirits of the dead set the stage for the second mesmerizing installment of Loretta Marion's paranormal suspense series.

A powerful storm descends upon Cape Cod's Whale Rock at the peak of tourist season—and the weekend Cassandra Mitchell's and Daniel Benjamin's wedding is set to take place at The Bluffs, the magnificent Victorian mansion Cassie inherited from her family. In the wake of the storm's destruction, three-year-old Lucas Kleister goes missing—and the body of small-time drug dealer Lee Chambers is found in a restaurant dumpster. Now, the WRPD are faced with a murder to solve, a missing child to find, and the aftermath of one of the worst storms in recent memory.

While aiding with the clean-up and helping the displaced, Cassie has been receiving cryptic messages from the spirits of her great-grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, the original residents of The Bluffs. At first, the messages are benign, but soon, they begin to point to something more sinister. As Cassie works to decipher their meaning, the specter of a mysterious local legend surfaces. The tale of Barnacle Boy—and what happened to him during another destructive storm decades earlier—will weave through the desperate search to find Lucas and the identity of the killer.

Set in Cape Cod, the author does a wonderful job describing the quaint community and all the colorful cast of characters. You can easily see the town and drama in your mind. The characters' details are so intricate, you will think you grew up with them or they're your next door neighbors. You will immediately become invested in all of their escapades. In addition to all of the meaty great characters, are the multiple story lines. I was completely absorbed in the story's plot from the get go. It focuses on this small New England community that comes together to address the town's needs and also some mysteries that coincidentally happen in the aftermath of a hurricane. It's engaging and authentic! I found it hard to put down because I had my theories about what would happen next and needed to know.

At last we are able to return to Whale Rock, the fictional town on the Cape, and reunite with all the quirky characters from Marion's first Haunted Bluffs Mystery, House of Ashes. Although Storm of Secrets can certainly be read on its own, I highly recommend reading House of Ashes too, if you can. Some mysteries from the first book have been resolved, but new ones abound that will keep you enthralled as Cassandra Mitchell and her friends cope with a deadly storm, a missing child, a shocking murder and a sinister local legend that has baffled Whale Rock's residents for decades. And while exciting events and plot twists drive the story, it is equally the depth and development of these multi-dimensional characters that will keep you reading. As with House of Ashes, you will regret having to say goodby to them at the end of this very entertaining sequel

nitially I thought, not that great of book. By the end I thought, what a good story. Storm of Secrets is the second book in the Haunted Bluffs Mystery Series. Cassie and her fiancé, Daniel are expecting to be married when a powerful storm interrupts those plan. While the town works at putting everything back together after the storm, a little boy goes missing, a man is found dead, and an old mystery from a previous storm is revived. I really loved the friendship between Cassie and Laura. They reminded me of a friendship I had as a high schooler and it brought fond memories back as I would read. The two working to solve the mysteries in their town; sharing secrets and ideas as well as a bit of gossip. I also enjoyed the aspect of Cassie’s great grandparents hovering over her, and sending her signals via the smell of sugar, burnt for bad vibes and sweet for good vibes. It was obvious where the writer was going, but Cassie seem to miss a few of the “sugar signals”. An enjoyable factor to this book, was all the pearls of wisdom Cassie drops via her granny Fi. One of my favorite quotes: You’ll be happier being yourself instead of pretending to be someone else. Love it. One of the hardest things for me to read in the story was the illness of one of the characters. Having been through it with my mother, it was obvious the writer had experienced it in real life herself. My emotions were all over the place and I was relieved when the story moved onward. The reasons why I initially did not like this book was because of all the jumping around the author did. Going from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and current day seemed jumbled and confusing until halfway though the book when all the dots starting connecting. There were so many characters at the beginning of the story, which took away from the enjoyment of the book, but eventually, the author streamlined and you were able to follow the story better. Over all, I found this book an enjoyable read. I love when a story that I start off not enjoying all of a sudden captures my interest and leaves me feeling satisfied when I’m finished. Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to review a copy of this book.

There is no option but to postpone Cassandra Mitchell and David Benjamin’s wedding as a vicious storm heads towards Whale Rock. After the storm, the locals deal with a missing three-year old boy and a man’s body that was found abandoned in a dumpster. David, former F.B.I., is assisting the local police as his fiancée, Cassie, a long-time resident of Whale Rock does her best to glean bits of information about the two investigations. Cassie has help from the spirits of her deceased great grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, who are able to “guide” her. Years ago, a young boy drowned and washed ashore. He was never identified and was interred in the Mitchell family graveyard. Is it too late to find out who he was? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

This is the second book in the series. Very well written and enjoyable. It was a nice long book so passed a good bit of time had to really pay attention to what was going on. This book goes back and forth from the past story of a young boy that was found washed up on the coast and the story line of a missing boy now. As they try to find the missing boy more and more of the past comes into play . Kept me reading to see what would happen next. Has very well thought out characters. Great Read.
