Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Sunita, a young volunteer at a veterinary clinic, finds herself caught up in frightening events as Hurricane Felix sweeps through her Pennsylvania town. Despite her fear of large dogs, she rises to the challenge of helping a Great Dane in danger of drowning in his kennel, and she braves a major flood to rescue a favorite cat. Through these experiences, Sunita also confronts an intense fear of deep water and an inability to swim, and finds she must profess these perceived weaknesses to her fellow volunteers at the clinic. The first-person, present-tense narrative may be a little confusing for the younger readers, but it does lend an immediacy to the story and makes it a unique read. Like the others in the "Wild at Heart" series, this provides excellent information about animals, and an inside look at a veterinary clinic. A short end section, in the form of a newspaper article from the clinic, gives concise advice on how to keep animals safe during emergencies. Overall, a very nice book, with characters that model excellent citizenship traits—bravery, friendship and community service. 2003 (Orig 2001), Gareth Stevens,

This is a book about a girl named Sunita and a cat with diabetes named Lucy. One day during a storm, Lucy leaps out of her owner's arms and crashes her leg into a door and breaks it. The next day, Lucy's owner's street floods. A motorboat comes to rescue them, but Lucy runs into the attic. What will Sunita do to help Lucy? What CAN she do?
