Storms of Life

Storms of Life

by Bernard Allison

The charismatic blues guitarist, songwriter, and singer Luther Allison died five years ago, cut down by cancer in the middle of the bluesman’s tremendous comeback. Like his father, Bernard Allison, has had a larger following in Europe than in the States, but with Storms of Life he is ready for the American blues mainstream. There is much of Luther in Bernard; searing guitar solos, an affinity for blending blues and funk, and the sense of storytelling that good blues demands. While the two tunes penned by the younger Allison are both slide instrumentals, Bernard pours his all into the covers. On Johnny Winter’s “Mean Town Blues” Allison kicks up a lot of Texas dust with his rapid-fire, raspy vocals and keening guitar. Mark Knopfler’s “I Think I Love You Too Much” is a groove-laden ballad, and ZZ Top’s “I Wanna Drive You Home” is done with a Chicago blues flare. The two most captivating cuts are contemporary interpretations. Leon Russell’s “Help Me Through the Day” is the kind of soulful blues ballad that is usually found on today’s chitlin’ circuit. And Rico McFarland’s “Just Do Me Any Way You Want” has a reggae rhythm to it. Storms of Life shows Bernard Allison’s wide stylistic range and dedication to making the blues work in a variety of situations.
