It is very interesting to discover the reasons why we do certain things and why we express our attitudes and actions in certain prescribed ways. I enjoyed reading this book.

The book examines familiar customs, beliefs and rituals, many of which have survived. It also examines curious lesser known ones. It is surprising to discover that many of their origins have very practical foundations.

An entertaining, conversational reference. The book offers a captivating insight into the historicity of a wide range of traditions and beliefs, and the symbolic context in which many of these have survived.

Reads a little better than dictionary entries, but worse than encyclopedic ones. There's no soul or wit or drama or even curiosity here. Bleh.

“Strange But True’ is a great book. I really enjoyed the read, and would definitely recommend it. It would be very useful as a reference or research book for many history, social studies or cultural subjects for example, but even also as an entertaining read. Finding out about one’s culture is starts from learning about our history, and the writer has chosen interesting customs and practices that are relevant to us today. It would also be a great gift for a loved one, or something you could read together with your partner and discuss. It is written very well and would be suitable for all.

A lot of the info seemed to come from Pliny the Elder. Not nearly in depth enough. Ive read better histories of the strange. Interesting yet disappointing.

The probable origins of so many of our still unequivocally accepted beliefs and customs are discussed and surveyed in this extensively researched book. Well done!

The book is does seem to be well researched tho I don't necessarily agree with some of their sources. I have heard some of the truth behind some of the legends and found this to be well thought out. Regardless, it is very interesting to find some information behind what people thought (and some still think) about magic, rituals, etc. Definitely a good read.

I really enjoyed browsing in this book. Although this subject matter is nothing new, and could have been presented as dry and academic, the author has supplemented historic facts with attention-grabbing contemporary material, and has added many unusual, unexpected insights. It is the type of book one can explore at any time as an entertaining reference.

A very well researched book about the origin of certain popular traditions we still carry out to this day . Handy too as a quick reference to discover the origins of certain superstitions, witchcraft, and magic practices.

An abundance of information, some a bit too dry. However, as a writer, I can see I shall be using this book for research for years to come. ~*~LEB~*~
