C. Vann Woodward's The Strange Career of Jim Crow is an important text in the canon of American history. I first read it as an American history graduate student, and this new edition, with an afterword by William McFeely will be the delight to a new generation of graduate students who will quickly learn that they can skip reading Woodward's short book and glean the entire thesis and important criticisms of his argument from the afterword. Shame on them if do that! I encourage every educated American to carefully read this small book. It is a classic in the field of American history.

I really didn't like this book as much as I expected, I pictured it less historical and to have more flow to it.
