Overview

Strauss: The Complete Songs - 2

Cunningly, Hyperion's complete edition of the lieder of Richard Strauss spearheaded by pianist Roger Vignoles is built not around chronology or theme or mood, but around the individual singer. Thus, Vol. 1 featured the lush, sensuous soprano of Christine Brewer, while this, Vol. 2, features the bright, clarion soprano of Anne Schwanewilms. Therefore, this disc contains such Strauss favorites as "Die Nacht," "All' mein Deganken," "Ruhe, meine Seele!," and the magnificent "Drei Lieder der Ophelia," along with such lesser known Strauss gems like "Weisser Jasmine" and "Wiegenliedchen." Throughout, Schwanewilms' brilliant voice -- with its strong tone, supple technique, and ardent delivery -- makes every song compelling. And throughout, Vignoles turns in accompaniments that ideally support and challenge Schwanewilms while retaining their own identity and integrity. With learned but engaging liner notes from Vignoles and clear but warm sound from producer Mark Brown and engineer Julian Millard, this second volume of Hyperion's Strauss edition lives up to the high standard set by the first -- and makes the listener look forward to volume three.
