Strays [Bonus DVD]

While it's been more than a decade since Perry Farrell last used the Jane's Addiction moniker for a studio foray, he clearly hasn't lost sight of what made that band such an archetype for countless freak-flag flyers in its heyday. Even more important, Strays indicates that Farrell and company aren't particularly interested in merely going through the motions in order to create something on the order of a Nothing's Still Shocking. Yes, the singer is prone to improbable vocal gymnastics, and guitarist Dave Navarro is as likely as ever to unspool riffs that act more like hydraulic drills than muscle cars -- as on the dizzying opener, "True Nature" -- but Strays isn't an exercise in nostalgia. For one thing, Farrell is less intent on flaunting his decadent streak -- the undulating "The Riches" is downright sunny, borderline Summer of Love, in its praise of life's simpler, more honest pleasures. Yeah, there are outbursts of venom, such as "Wrong Girl," which uses a badass rhythm to emphasize the tale of a badass gal, but even there, the band's mood isn't unrelievedly black. Just as importantly, drummer Stephen Perkins and newly recruited bassist Chris Chaney lock together with the same loopy urgency that Perkins and Eric Avery managed in Jane's original incarnation -- especially on the frothing "Hypersonic." As cuddly as it is mangy, Strays shows Jane's Addiction to be well within reach of having nine lives.

in a time when rock music seems to be sinking like the titanic, jane's addiction comes along with an album that is complete and true to the roots of rock music. they don't reinvent the wheel, but they sure do make a good one

Strays has to have the best hard rock i've ever heard. The heavy riffing & bass, & hard vocals are awesome. I give this album 2 thumbs up.

Strays is amazing. Like fine wine, these cats get better with age, and Chris Chaney is a wonderful addition. Rock on, Guys! You did an incredible job. I listen to this albumn all the time (along with all my other Janes albumns)...I used to party to Janes in college (10 years ago) and the band is an integral part of my genetic makeup now...*hehe*

I wasn't planning on buying this CD I don't have any other JA CD's and have never gotten into them, but out of the blue I decided to get it. Rolling Stone gave it 4 stars and that had something to do with my decision, but the bottom line is this record rules. It's what I would have wanted STP's No. 4 to be. Awesomely executed. There is obviously major talent in this group. Farrell has an amazing voice and Navarro is crazy on the guitars. Hey, I love the NY renaissance bands, but for pure rock fury, they can't top this one. Good CD, go out and get it. Best tracks: Just Because, The Riches
