I have been trying for years to find information on stretching based on scientific research, and I've been shocked at how little is available. Books on stretching or yoga are based mostly on tradition, and what little scientific information I could find was contradictory: Some studies showed that stretching reduced injuries, but some showed it CAUSED injuries. The reason for this contradiction is that it depends entirely on HOW you stretch. Judy Alter's book, Stretch and Strengthen, and her previous and excellent book, Surviving Exercise, are exactly what I've been looking for. She gives detailed instruction on how to stretch so it will help you and not hurt you. Stretching can be very good for you, but only if it is done correctly. Alter's information is based on scientific research. Some of the exercises are very similar to what you are familiar with, but with small differences. But, as Alter points out, the difference between hurting and helping yourself while stretching is often something seemingly minor -- how you're holding your head or how much arch you have in your back or the direction your foot is pointing. With this book, you can learn how to stretch correctly and so heal your injuries and prevent them in the future. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and one of the most important things I recommend is exercise. It can have such a wonderful impact on your mood and your effectiveness in life. Dont get me wrong, this book is really good, but it lacked in variation of strectches. I liked the break down of the muscle groups and the explanations on how they work. But there were some areas that just needed a little more, for instance with the stretching excercises for the wrist and forearms.
