Striking Distance (I-Team Series #6) by Pamela Clare

Her past is a secret—even to her.
Discovering it will be the most dangerous move of her life.

TV reporter Laura Nilsson, known as the “Baghdad Babe,” spent eighteen months in an Al-Qaeda compound after being kidnapped live on the air. Two years later, she’s still wondering why.

No mission in Javier Corbray’s fourteen years as a Navy SEAL affected him the way Laura’s rescue did. No woman had stirred his protective instincts the way she did. And he wants her more than he’s ever wanted anyone.

As Laura and Javier’s passion ignites, so does Laura’s need to discover the mystery of her past. Especially when she learns that her abduction was not random—and that she’s still a target for a killer with an impenetrable motive. Now Javier will have to rely on his skills to keep the woman he loves from being struck down before she dares uncover the truth.

Striking Distance gets a special place on the Keeper Shelf. From the moment I started this book I could not put it down. Now that I'm done I am emotionally drained and not sure I can leave a a worthy review. First off, 5 stars is not enough! Pamela Clare brought the pages alive and made me feel. I felt sad, I cried, I got angry and cried some more. She made me swear out loud and had me wanting to kill the evil bastard Al-Nassar. My heart broke for the pain that Laura and Javier had to endure. But through it all I felt the powerful love that was shared between Javier and Laura. A love strong enough to heal a wounded soul and make it whole again. We I-team junkies have our favorite hero's. We have polls and banter back and forth about who the number one I-Team hero is. Team Marc, Team Julian and so on. All I have to say is....Move over boys cause there is a new hero in town and he has captured my heart and I'm betting the heart of many others. Pamela Clare continues to write an amazing, realistic, edge of your seat story that grabs you from page one and leaves you wanting more!

Five stars for Pamela Clare's Striking Distance, an edge-of-your seat emotional, sexy, and suspenseful page turner. Pamela Clare's I-Team is the inspiration behind a group of fans on Facebook called, appropriately, "Pamela Clare's I-Team." I became a member of this group a few weeks ago, and have truly enjoyed the camaraderie while counting down to the release of her sixth I-Team book Striking Distance on 5 November 2013. Luckily Clare had a remedy for everyone who was expressing withdrawal from one of their favorite series, which was the release of a prequel novella (First Strike) a few weeks ago. Like so many others I waited till yesterday (5 November) to read Striking Distance and quickly became caught up in the story of Navy SEAL Javier "Javi" "Cobra" Corbray and Swedish-American television journalist, now I-Team reporter Laura Nilsson. I do recommend that you read the two novellas that precede book six (Skin Deep and First Strike), as there are characters and motivations in both of these books that will help inform your read of Striking Distance. In many ways, this was my favorite I-Team novel as I admired both protagonists and also how Clare handled the physical and emotional abuse of Laura at the hands of her captors for two years - as well as the reclamation of her life. It was inspiring on many levels and also helped shed light on abuses that we might otherwise ignore. In addition to a tremendous amount of suspense and intrigue, a betrayal of friendship by a member of the I-Team (though I have a feeling redemption will be on its way for that character in the future), and what felt almost like a family reunion as characters from previous I-Team novels had fairly large supporting roles in this story, Clare offered a true sense of kindness and generosity of spirit between Javi and Laura as they became reacquainted with one another and learned to trust their feelings once again. Having met a writer under a fatwa (yes, that writer), I hung out a lot with his bodyguard, who was a slightly older and smoother version of Javi (if you can picture that). It's hard to comprehend the effect of living with a known threat constantly - and the hyper-awareness and stress that brings - but Clare captures it perfectly in this novel. I loved the plot twists and turns, the introduction of some new characters that I hope we'll see more of, and also the way that Clare concluded this book. I'm not going to give the plot away, but I will say that true love is represented here on many different and beautiful levels - and recommend that you have a box of Kleenex at your side as you read this edge-of-your-seat page turner. I highly, highly recommend Striking Distance as well as Clare's other I-Team novels and give this book five stars.

I loved all the I-Team books but this one did not engage me nearly as much. It just dragged on and on for the most part, breaking off the suspense and not getting the romance to fully take off. What I liked in the previous books was the build up of the suspense and passionate romance all at once. Everything was intense and you could not turn the pages fast enough. All that was missing here. Even the suspenseful plot was somehow predictable. There were clues so evident that I got frustrated waiting to see when one of the characters would pick up on them. Of course it was the heroine who finally put it all together while portraiting the FBI as the biggest morons, and our favorite male characters from the previous books following closer in IQ level. Disappointing because the plot had potential, a lot of potential, but it fell flat.

## AWFUL. I liked all the I-Team books except this one. Oh, don't get me wrong, Ms. Clare's writing is superb as usual. It's the story I couldn't stand. Way too much sadness, devestation, heartbreak, grief and suffering. It was downright depressing. The year and a half of beatings, rapes and subsequent child was so over the top. And it bothered me that the hero stayed away for 2 more years after he rescues the heroine. He runs into her by chance at a BBQ even though he knows where to find her the entire time. So the book spans 4 years. Ugh, I read to escape not to be depressed. Won't be reading again.

STRIKING DISTANCE is one of the best romantic suspense novels I've read in a long time. It is the story of Laura Nilsson, a reporter struggling to put her life back together after spending time in captivity, and of Javier Corbray, the SEAL who rescued Laura and who will do whatever is necessary to protect her. I don't want to spoil anything, so I will just say that Pamela Clare delves into some very sensitive issues, both personal and political, and sheds light on them with grace and power. Bring Kleenex. You'll need it. But you'll also leave this story feeling heart-happy.

In the past I have really enjoyed the I Team stories. This one dragged for me. I also was not impressed that the hero's injury story closely resembled that of Marcus Luttrell, who wrote the book that "Lone Survivor" was based on. It also didn't have an HEA that I could appreciate. The heroine's story also sounded a lot like Amanda Lindhout's, who wrote "A House In the Sky." I just felt like a lot of the background was lifted from current events with a little tweeking. I couldn't relate to the heroine at all, especially some of the decisions she made towards the end. Definitely, not a book I would recommend.

Exceptional Romantic Suspense Pamela Clare has an incredible knack for writing exceptionally well-developed characters and story lines that tend to have more depth than the average romantic suspense. Javier and Laura became real people, struggling to work through difficult issues that played out against the backdrop of a larger threat. I won't rehash the plot, as it is available above, but I will say this book made me laugh, cry and FEEL. I'm also continuing to think about this book, long after I finished the last page, which is always a good sign. :) I highly recommend this book to fans of Romantic Suspense, as well as anyone who is on the fence about reading a romance novel. This book will get you hooked! I do recommend reading the prequel, First Strike, as it will give the clear backstory about Javier and Laura.  This is a book that I will be re-reading in the future!

There are certain things I have come to expect from an Iteam book....Heat, Suspense, Romance, a sexy hot guy and a woman with a brain, and Striking Distance didn't disappoint.  I loved this book from cover to cover.  I admit, I was given an ARC of this book, but I will also admit that I loved it so much I also bought the ebook when it came out so that I could read it again and again!!  This series just seems to get better and better.  I would recommend it to anyone who loves romantic suspense or just a good book!!

I believe this is the best I-Team story to date. I will credit the negative reviews to the difficult subject matter vice the quality of the writing because it was so well done. Ms. Clare has a true talent for taking threads of recent events and weaving them into a realistic tale of vulnerable yet strong women who find amazing men who love them supported by the powerful friendships of the people around them. To quickly summarize the start...In the prequel, teams member Javier met journalist Laura in the Middle East while both were traveling for work and spent time together before continuing their journeys. This book picks up two months later as Javi, in San Diego, watches her being taken hostage on live TV while reporting from Afganistan. Reports soon claim she was beheaded, but two years later she is recovered by chance during a mission to get the man who took her. First recovering physically with family for a year then moving forward to continue her life Laura is now two years later working in Denver as a member of the I-Team as that evil terrorist is finally on trial for the attrocities he committed. One threatening incident after another occurs as they and law enforcement try to uncover the threat(s) as both Laura and Javier struggle with episodes of PTSD and guilt over their pasts. The topics of extended imprisonment, brutal abuse, and rape are covered along with the difficulties of recovering from such abuse. These difficult scenes and memories are touched on in a sensitive manner that respects and supports what victims go through in fighting their way out of the darkness and into a better life

Out of all the series this one was my least favorite. Its still a good read though and I would have read it anyway out of love for the series. It did bother me that she took events that happened to real life Navy Seal Marcus Luttreal. I love Marcus and his time down range was heroic, gut wrenching, and brave. I guess most events that happen in real life though are in fictional books conquencidentally and purposely if you think about it. It was a sad book but life is sad. I look forward to reading the last book in the series about Holly (finally poor Holly can stop oogling her friends men on the side line) which what I hear should be funny. Sad to always see a great series end. I hate gambling on new series but this one paid off. Thank you Ms. CLARE for all your hard work.

Pamela Clare novels have been a joy to read, whether historical or modern day dramas. Her research is apparent in all her books. All of the I team novels will give her readers an excellent picture of the city of Denver and the personal lives and investgative endeavors of the newspaper reporters of that fine area of Colorado. Her depiction of the crimes and the law inforcement department personel, while fiction, are very revealing and informational. And don't forget the hot, hot, relationships woven throughout each story! She has a way of puting plenty of romance and compassion in each story and making the characters very human and believable. I also look for her next story.

Pamela Clare is such a gifted author. She drew me in and made me care about Laura & Javier. I read "First Strike" before "Striking Distance" so I already felt like I knew them and I loved catching up with the other ITeam members. If you are looking for something hot to read on a cold can't go wrong with the ITeam Series by Pamela Clare. Enjoy :)

To start, I highly recommend that anyone who wants to read this book must read First Strike and Skin Deep as the background is set. I am a huge fan of the I-team and love how the all the characters from past books make appearances. This one is no exception. This story is intense, Javier and Laura are well developed characters and the suspense will keep you reading! Overall I can only say buy the books and read them. Then you will be as speechless as I am in reviewing this. Thank you Pamela Clare and please keep writing great romantic suspense.
