Chapter One

Struffel's New Pet

One fine day, Struffel the little bear was watching television with his mom and dad. He saw a program showing different kinds of animals found in people's homes. He wondered what it would be like to care for a pet of his own.

But what kind of pet? A kitten? A puppy? A goldfish? Maybe, a bird. No, maybe a bunny rabbit. He thought and thought and thought ...

Finally, Struffel fell asleep, dreaming that he would most like to have a puppy or a dog. His doggie would have a big bushy tail and white fur and would be easy to carry.

When Struffel woke up, he asked his mother, "Could I please have a pet, Mom? I would love to have a pet to care for."

"Why do you want a pet? And who will look after it?" his mother asked. "Animals are expensive and a lot of work."

"I will take care of it, Mom," promised Struffel. "I'll do all the work by myself!"

"What kind of pet do you want?" Struffel's mother asked.

"I want a puppy or a dog, Mom," Struffel said. "May I please have a little doggie?"

"A dog?" his mother asked. She frowned and looked thoughtful.

"Yes, a dog. A white puppy with a bushy tail," Struffel said firmly. He wanted the doggie in his dream.

"Okay." Struffel's mother decided. "We will go and get you a dog."

Struffel was so excited that he began jumping up and down for joy. "Oh, thank you, Mom! Thank you so much! I can't wait to get my doggie!"

"We will get you a dog from the animal shelter," his mother said. "The shelter is where pets are left by people who don't want them anymore. We will rescue a dog that needs a new home. Then we'll go to a pet store, where they have special toys and food for all kinds of pets."
