I brought the paperback version of this book and its an invaluable source of all the great submarines throughout human naval history.

For giving a breif overview of most submarines, this book does a good job. Newer subs, such as the Seawolf, are still classified in their designs a specs, and it would be rediciulous to publish it with 'Not known' in all categories. It is interesting to look through and see the progress made, by different countries, in the realm of submersibles. For a complete written history, I would certainly suggest you go elsewhere, but for quick stats and reference, this book does the job.

This book explained a lot of historical submarines, but it was missing several important new submarines. I recommend this book to people who does not have much knowledge of submarines and people who wants to know about older submarines.

I found this book to be somewhat lacking in content, especially concerning some historicaly significant United States submarines. No mention is made of submarines involved is special operations, such as Halibut or Parche. In some cases the author includes multiple examples of the same class of ship, to the exclusion of others. I also noted some factual errors. It would be okay to use this book as a quick, but not definative, reference.
