The Rumor in told from multiple perspectives, with each chapter named for the character whose view we would see or the community as a greater whole.
The novel follows four primary plot lines:
1. Madeline King's efforts to produce a new novel. Originally, Madeline has no idea what to write about, but in time she decides to write the story of her best friend Grace's affair.
2. Grace Pancik's passionate, extramarital affair with her gardener, Benton Coe, serves as the secondary plot line.
3. The third plot line focuses on Madeline and Grace's children: Allegra, Brick, and Hope. Allegra and Hope are twin sisters that appear to have little in common, apart from their shared affections for Brick. Allegra is dating Brick, but is also cheating on him with an older boy named Ian.
4. The final plot line centers aroundEddie Pancik, Grace's husband, and the desperate state of his financial affairs.
These four plot lines come together to form a coherent, tightly interwoven story.
