Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
Super saccharine alert! Kylie Jean's sole goal in life is to become a beauty queen, and she is not afraid to let everyone know it. The last day of school is the saddest for Kylie, she will miss her teacher and bus driver "something fierce." However, her saddest day turns into her happiest day when she finds out she has won a scholarship to Mariposa Ranch girl's summer camp. Her cousin, Lucy, is going too, so Kylie is thrilled beyond belief. The best part of camp is earning points to become Ruler for the Day and Kylie does her best to make sure she will win. Everything is going her way until she meets another camper, Miley, who could pass as Kylie's twin. Miley is trouble from the beginning, and seems to go out of her way to get Kylie in trouble. Kylie writes letters home telling of her woes, though her positive attitude never wanes and she continues to be on her best behavior. Finally, she and Miley make amends, and even become friends. Not surprisingly, Kylie wins the contest and becomes camp ruler for the day. In true Kylie spirit, she suggests each girl be in charge, making everyone 'queen' with her. Everyone gets to do their favorite camp activity, and it is Kylie's best day at camp. Following the story are suggestions for discussion relevant to the story, a recipe for Summertime Lemonade and a list of other titles in the "Kylie Jean" series. Some girls may not relate to this book as seems a bit prissy at times. Not everyone is a girly-girl, nor should they be! Peschke's work seems to imply bubbly, princess-y girls are the best, and all girls should aspire to that persona. The idea of having a positive attitude is important, and to be emulated, but other personalities are capable of that and still sparkle. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young
