About the Author

Liu Fang est née à Kunming, en Chine, en 1974. Ayant appris à jouer du pipa à l’âge de six ans, elle se taille rapidement une réputation d’enfant prodige. Au cours de sa carrière, elle s’est produite dans le cadre d’événements prestigieux du monde entier, notamment à l’occasion des célébrations du 60e anniversaire de l’UNESCO à Paris, du Festival WOMAD au Royaume-Uni et en Espagne et du festival de musique du monde Les Suds à Arles. Elle a également partagé la scène avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin, l’Ensemble Nishikawa et l’Orchestre des pays de Savoie. Sa discographie compte une dizaine d’enregistrements, notamment l’album Le son de soie, qui a remporté le prestigieux Grand Prix du disque de l’Académie Charles Cros en 2006. Elle habite actuellement à Montréal
Han Han est diplômée de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Guangzhou en Chine. Elle a illustré plusieurs livres pour enfants qui sont devenus très populaires en Chine, notamment Le papa monstre de Peng Yi et Libellule, libellule de Yin Jianling. Elle a reçu le prestigieux Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Award en 2015 pour Un concert d’été au clair de lune.

First published in China, this picture book by Han follows child Xiaomi and her parents when they experience a blackout one summer night. Dismay gives way to delight when Dad suggests a courtyard concert. As Dad plays the erhu, Mom accompanies him on the accordion, and Xiaomi introduces the musicians. The following spread shows eight square panels of apartment building neighbors as they hear the music from above, before walking down to join the family and dance. Though the text sometimes tells rather than shows (“Everyone clapped and thanked the musicians for an unforgettable summer moonlight concert”), art that highlights delicate features and realistic postures gives the book a classic feel, while bleeding washes of watercolor lend atmosphere. A capably told story about the community-building powers of music. Accompanied by a CD recording of a readaloud and a song, as well as a code for digital downloads. Ages 7–9. (May)

They have just eaten dinner when the power goes out. Xiaomi worries about her homework; her mother frets about dirty dishes; her father looks outside where the moonlight shines down on the yard and proposes an outdoor concert. As they begin to play, neighbors join in with instruments or with dancing, embracing the night. When the power is restored, the concert breaks up. Han's wispy watercolor illustrations capture the soft beauty of the moonlit night and the atmosphere in which crying babies can be soothed by a sudden and curious turn of events. The setting is the Chinese countryside, an amalgam of apartment buildings and smaller residences, with the locals enjoying a summer night.
