I guess I expected more than what we got. There was much less story here than in previous books, and I guess I assumed there would be some closure. I did enjoy the twists, but not enough to offset the feeling that the book should have been a hundred pages longer...since it was the conclusion. I reread all twelve books in preparation...then paid $15 for it. I was let down.

4.5 STARS Charley had been banished for restoring Amber’s life and now, she is back after a hundred years of exile, but thankfully time runs differently on earth. While Charlie was trapped in her cosmic time out, Reyes has been busy gathering the troops in one place to fight the demons who were released when the hell dimension he made and eventually broke in order to get back out. Charley has been told the key to winning the fight between good and evil is finding out what really happened to her mother when she was born. Charley’s usual irreverence and quirky behavior is in full swing and thankfully, Reyes is by her side much of the book trying to save Albuquerque and the world from the spreading evil demons released from the dark dimension. Demons are possessing people and turning them into vicious killers. These are particularly bad ones created by someone important to Charley. All the favorite characters have important roles to play in this final book which has some surprises, some happy and others quite sad. Some events in this books will as usual have readers laughing, but others will bring them to tears. My favorite part is that Reyes and Charley are together for much of the story and some loose ends are tied up as well as questions being answered. Ultimately, Charley’s main concern is for her daughter’s welfare as well as Reyes. What shakes out from their earlier actions in the previous book has some good and not so good consequences. And so we come to the end of all things and possibly a beginning. I imagine finishing a beloved series is always hard for the author as well as the fans. Admittedly, this conclusion left me feeling conflicted. I can see why Ms. Jones wrote it that way as it sets up Charley’s daughter, Beep, and Osh’s story. I have mixed feelings about Reyes and Charley’s resolution and where this story takes ultimately them. That being said, this book is a necessary read for fans of the series to see it all come to completion. This last book and its conclusion will have readers talking about it for a long time.

Thirteen, thirteen major challenges, thirteen in the ‘crew’, thirteen lost to the Shade, the number pops up regularly and often, and serves only to reinforce the final episode in this saga that is Charley. And let there be no questions – for this story as it surrounds Charley and Reyes is ending, in all ways marvelous, heartbreaking and SO very Charley that you can’t help but smile despite the tears. From major revelations about Ubie, a stand off with Michael the Archangel, deals made and bargains struck, and all of this in the midst of a hell dimension opening in the apartment that Charley and Reyes shared. The Shade demons, created by Reyes when banished on another plane, specifically meant to resist Charley’s powers have invaded – and Albuquerque is under martial law – no one in or out until the cause and solution for this virus can be found. And, things aren’t good as Charley, after disobeying and flaunting her ‘bad behavior’ in front of Michael the Archangel, has been banished to a ‘hell dimension’, 10 days in human time, a century in her own, until she is released to Reyes- so they can find the way to banish the Shade. Of course, everyone has been relocated out of the apartment to a warehouse on the outskirts of town: and the gang is all there. And fortunately for us, there is plenty of time to unearth secrets, get a chance to say goodbye to some, OMG to other’s revelations, and of course, follow Charley as yet another ‘near to death’ child appears in her place- needing answers and to find his mother. With one last appearance from the evil that haunted Reyes growing up, a showdown with the Vatican, finding another piece of the puzzle that is Rocket and Blue, and a wonderful ‘last chance’ moment with Beep that brings untold tears and lots of healing to Reyes, the story moves from high to low-lights, each moment revealing yet another piece of the puzzle that is Charley’s world, in ways that just couldn’t have been any different. With all that has happened, and Charley’s tendency to pop off with a half-conceived plan (or fully conceived but destined to go pear-shaped) what I think I (and most of us) have failed to notice is her ability to act FOR the right reasons, giving those plans a bit of oomph and perhaps drawing on the luck that is so needed. It took me 6 days (yes -six) to read this. That’s 50 pages (or about 3 chapters) a day – savoring, sobbing, digesting and even re-reading bits that seemed throwaway at first, but are supremely important. I cried. I laughed. I wanted to beg Darynda Jones to continue the story – never realizing that she found THE PERFECT CONCLUSION. Everyone says their goodbyes, and everyone is, for the moment, safe and happy. Taking her irreverent application of ‘rules, guidelines and ‘what must be’ into account, Charley bargains with Michael the Archangel, although is it really a bargain if the angel is smirking and seems to somehow respect your chutzpah? And Charley makes that ultimate sacrifice in hopes that she can, again, bargain with the fates – and concludes this story of a woman / god and her friends / family / angels, humans, demons and spirits who sought only to do the best that she could. I can’t recommend this series any stronger than that – grab them all. Read. Laugh. Cry, Repeat. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

This is it, the final book in this series. And how fitting that it's the number thirteen. I'm sad that it's going to be the last one but at the same time I'm glad that we got our big ending. I think we've all been waiting a long time for that to happen, since the previous book ended on such a huge cliffhanger. And to be honest, this book ends more on a HFN than a HEA, since there's still the big battle that Beep has to fight agains Lucifer. I've read somewhere, so this info might not be 100% accurate, that we'll get a spin off for Beep's story. I hope that's true, since I'm in love with this series and would love to continue reading about such fantastic characters. Especially since we don't know what happened to Osh. So I think the author is hinting at the new spin off with that little clue. And about what happens in this book...well...I'm not giving away any big spoilers so you'll just have to read the book to find out for yourself. But it's safe to say that this time all that could go wrong, goes wrong. And disastrously so. As in all hell is breaking loose and in the literal sense at that. Can't say I'm surprised by that, since that happens to me on a daily basis once I leave home and my cats can have the time of their lives destroying the house. As for Charley and Reyes, I mean, they can't do any wrong in my opinion. Even if they accidentally almost destroy the whole world, no biggie. After being gone from the earthly plain for what felt like an eternity Charley had to live a little, right? And also, this might be the book where we get to see the couple spend most of their time together. Can't tell you how much I loved that. They are one of my all time favourite couples, their relationship is always so funny and something I someday wish to have with my loved one. Not to mention all the sexy scenes we get in this book. Aside from that, it felt so good to get the whole gang back together, the whole big family reuniting once again for this big battle. I mean, what more could one want from this series conclusion, right? Well, there were some pretty big plot twist and revelations and even deaths that left me completely stunned. I think it was Rocket's secret that had shocked me the most, like who knew? I was so happy and at the same time so sad for him. I wished someone would give him a big hug. All in all, this is a bitterweeet ending of a great series and this book is a must read for all Charley and Reyes fans!

Charley Davidson is one of my favorite protagonists of all time. Smart, sexy and especially snarky and sarcastic, if she were real, we’d be besties. AND Reyes. OMG. Sex on a stick. And a great storyline too!!! Keep them coming Darynda Jones!!

This is the first book I have read by Darynda Jones. I got the ebook from NetGalley for an honest review and I am glad I did. The plot was well written and the characters were very interesting. I had very little problem catching on to the story. I liked this book so much I got the other 12. After I read them I think I will read this one again.
