*Note: Previously published in the Christmas Anthology Summons from the Castle. It's published now as a single novella 25,000 words with some minor changes and the Christmas aspect has been mostly removed and can be read during anytime of the year.*

Blackmailed by a British Naval Commander, Captain Randall Whitton, a smuggler with a penchant for gold is rescued by Jewel Derington, a feisty plantation owner and the very woman who betrayed him into the jungles of Barbados. Escaping danger has never been so thrilling. Together they are drawn into a political game of winner takes all from which only his grandfather, the Duke of Danby, can rescue them.

Fascinated by the glitter of his Caribbean Jewel, Randall's lust for gold soon fades. His quest to tame this fiery treasure catapults them both into an adventure where the stakes are higher and the prize greater than either of them have ever dared dream.

Meet the Author

Suzie’s life has been one big adventure. Her childhood was full of reading the classics like Treasure Isle, Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson tales. In fact her mother has another word for her “stories” but to this day, Suzie continues to dream up adventures of her own.

As a pregnant teen her adventure became a life-defining moment as she struggled to survive and raise a child on her own. During those rocky years writing became an emotional outlet.

After a very long divorce she again finds herself climbing that rocky path of life and has learned to live by a single quote: “Obstacles are placed in our path to determine whether we really wanted something, or just thought we did.” By Dr. Harold Smith.

Suzie looks forward to each new obstacle.

Taking life by the proverbial horns, Suzie now lives happily ever after with her new beau, three boys and one little Shih tzu named Peppy Le’Pew in NC. One day she plans to retire and sail along the east coast an adventurer to the end.

I read this under the title "A Caribbean Jewel for Christmas" as part of the anthology "A Summons from the Duke of Danby." The duke has decided it's time his grandchildren got married. He's got a stack of special licenses, and he's not afraid to use them! Captain Randall Whitton has been summoned home by the Duke of Danby. However, Randall is in no hurry to get there since the duke shunned Randall's father and has made no attempt to get in touch until now. When a British naval commander tries to hire and then force him into a traitorous smuggling run, Randall decides it might be a good time to leave the Caribbean and see what kind of inheritance he can wrangle out of the duke. He doesn't count on plantation owner Jewel Derington getting caught up in the evil commander's plans. Now they've got to make it across the Atlantic one step ahead of the commander, which gives them plenty of time to know each other. This story does have some consistency problems (just when do you stop feeling the Caribbean breeze once you've left the Caribbean?), but overall, it is an action-packed, steamy romance that brings another one of the duke's grandchildren back home.
