This book is awesome! Kathy Sierra and Burt Bates take a detailed, yet light-hearted approach towards covering the topics for the SCJP exam. They meld topics together seamlessly, so that it is not forgotten. This book also covers the SCJD exam by going over a mock assignment (The SCJD consists of completing an assignment as well as an essay exam.), and covering the areas on which your assignment will be graded by the fine accessors at Sun. This was a very helpful, knowledgeable book that helped me ace the JP and JD exams. The cd contains testing software, which gives you an accurate feel for the real thing. If you are serious about studying Java and preparing for these two exams, this book will be a very valuable resource for you.

I got a score of 93 on the SCJP exam using only this book as a study guide. This well-organized book contains all you need to know to pass the exam, including exam tips, sample questions at the end of each chapter and two free practice exams (one on the included disk and one available online). And it does it all with a sense of humor too :) Study this book from cover-to-cover, do all of the sample questions, and take the practice exams, and you should do very well on the test.

This week I passed the Sun Certified Java Programmer Exam with a score of 90%. This is the only book I needed. It covers everything that you need to know for each exam objective. It also tells you what you don't need to know. (i.e., Swing, AWT, and I/O are not covered on the exam.) The format and difficulty of the sample questions are identical to the actual exam questions. (Yes, the actual exam questions are very tricky and the exhibits contain very subtle errors.) You should study the chapter summaries and self test questions until you know them cold. Once you are comfortable with the material, go to javaranch.com and take the mock exams. They also have some great forums on certification if you have questions. My only criticism is regarding the chapters covering the Sun Certified Java Developer exam (Ch 10-17). There is a lot of good information, but it's light on specifics. I suspect this was intentional to avoid giving away too much about the solution to the exam assignment. I would have liked to see a couple of example assignments similar to the actual exam assignment.

This book is great because it won't make you waste any time on things you don't need to know for the exam. Everything in it is a must know. However, I think it assumed some previous knowledge in some important topics, so you should complement this book with Java Certification by Khalid Mughal. You need both, not one or the other. Both complement each other perfectly.

best book I have seen for Java programmer certificate. very detailed, very clear. it kept my attention and everything did make perfect sense. End of chapter summary and the sample tests are a very big help. I learned to understand things and not just memorize. Enjoyed it! Exam-watch tips are also a very big help, to tell you about hard or unusual traps on the exam. From the sample tests at the end and on the CD, I think that I am now prepared to get a very good score.
