Louisa was awoken by a small bang downstairs, her brown eyes opening slowly. Her head against Savant's chest, she sniffed her runny nose, trying to sit up. But Savant's arm was draped over her, so she would have to turn to alternative methods.

Closing her eyes, she waited for a few seconds before the rush of power and heightened awareness hit her, the feeling that comes with using telekinesis. Carefully prodding his arm, she managed to shove it off, but he kept on snoring.

Louisa Savant pulled her blue nightgown over her pajamas, retrieving Savant's maser watch and slipping it onto her arm. After checking that the folded flechette disk was loaded, she gradually cracked the door that led from their room to the stairway. Ben's room was on the left, and she made sure that the baby was safe. He was, breathing normally, safely in his crib.

Wasting no more time, she locked her son's door, and perched on the banister, sliding down the double stairway with the watch raised in front of her. The front door was ahead, the kitchen and bathroom to her left and the living room to the right. The sound came again from the kitchen, so she crouched by the doorway, using the maser to see through the wall, her eyes glowing a pale blue.

She saw a person hunkered over the sink, reading a magazine and munching a candy bar. The hell? was her only thought.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" Multiple voices shouted, startling her. The previously black windows, darkened by nighttime, were now bright, and the clock's hands sped up to the appropriate time.

Arch, Selena, Shadowforth, Ingro, and Founder appeared from the living room, and a wormhole opened up in the ceiling, Savant dropping through in his regular clothes, looking quite pleased with himself.

"It worked," he said gleefully, hugging Lou and kissing her softly.

Arch, Savant's twin brother, punched him on the shoulder. "Gonna pop the question yet? Or is one baby already not enough?" he teased, reminding them of Ben and teenage hormones and being alone together.

Watchman stepped from the kitchen, sucking the candy-bar wrapper into his mouth and swallowing it. The brother of Selena, Watchman was something of an anomaly. As his sister had, he recieved Cosmic Awareness powers in his genetic code, but it was limited to only things that affected him, where on the other hand Selena had a form of Absolute Awareness. "Happy birthday, Lulula," Watchman congratulated. "Seventeen. You're past sweet sixteen; it's all downhill from here." He leaned against the doorway, crossing his arms and staring intently at her.

Selena pried Savant away from Lou, hugging her. "Happy birthday."

"Thank you," Louisa replied with a smile. Ingro, the local alchemist, looked her gown up and down. "Sweet duds, Lou. Did Vant pick it out?"

Louisa blushed in embarrassment. Founder, the runemaster of the island, tossed her a box with green ribbon, which exploded into confetti as she caught it. Savant brushed off confetti pieces from Lou's face, shooing them all out except for Shadowforth. "Go on; bug off. Go back to your lives, citizens. Let her have a normalish day."

Shadowforth was in fact the family lich, having served the Savants for centuries. Seven feet tall and completely silent, he was an imposing figure and effective bodyguard. He kicked Arch in the rear as he went by, who made a "meh" sound and closed the door behind him.
